Hunnam has been in a relationship with his jewelry designer girlfriend for over ten years, and the two have not yet decided to tie the knot. As the owner of Maison de Morgana, McNelis creates rings, bracelets, and other jewelry pieces from brass and bronze in her Los Angeles company.

Her company's website writes that she draws inspiration for her designs from various things, from Alexander McQueen to a neo-gothic aesthetic. Before she started Maison de Morgana, McNelis was in business with her sister.

However, due to the economic crisis of 2007, the business did not land on its feet but served as a learning curve for McNelis. Despite the unsuccess of her business with her sister, McNelis said she was able to see the silver lining with one door closing and another opening:

"It taught me that within every obstacle is a seed of opportunity, and that seed became Maison de Morgana."

She used her jewelry-making skills and gifted Hunnam with an engraved ring; he was hesitant at first but ended up falling in love with the ring. The piece of jewelry had "I love you endlessly" inscribed.

And when she wasn't working, McNelis loved traveling. Her favorite place to travel was London, as every street was rich with history and had "a story to tell."

She said a place she had not been but dreamed of visiting was India, for its "mystical charm and cultural richness." She said she knew the experience would be life-changing.

In 2013, Hunnam revealed that he and McNelis had purchased a ranch; they wanted to escape Hollywood and bought their land in Los Angeles.

The couple had plans to live sustainably and included an organic garden on their property. They had multiple chickens, donkeys, and ducks; Hunnam said they intended to use the chickens for meat.

That same year, Hunnam spoke about his initial acceptance of the lead role in "Fifty Shades of Grey" and said McNelis was "part of the decision-making process." She was a fan of the books and was excited when Hunnam was presented with the opportunity.

In 2016, Human defended McNelis from female fans who were upset about his relationship status. The English actor took to social media to send a message to a "group of immature girls" who made offensive remarks towards McNelis, her appearance, and her relations with Hunnam. Hunnam said:

Hunnam revealed that being in a long-term, monogamous relationship took effort from both ends. The couple usually split the household chores, but he recalled a time when he spent hours cleaning the house so McNelis could come back home to a sweet surprise.

The gesture saw him up until the early morning hours; Hunnam cleaned the house, bought the groceries, and did the laundry. He topped it off by leaving her flowers in the bedroom and kitchen. The actor said about keeping the romance alive:
