11 Actors and Actresses Who Refused Playing Superheroes In MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the most popular movies series of our time. They base the stories on the famous comic books and have a star-studded cast. You would imagine that every actor would die to play a role in one of their movies; however, some stars refused a role in the franchise. Let’s see take a look.

11. Alec Baldwin – Unknown Villain

The actor appeared in Howard Stern’s show and revealed that he was offered the role of a villain in the MCU. ‘I wasn't available. They wanted me to work a certain time, and because of my wife's pregnancy, I had to turn down two films this summer that I wanted to do.’

Baldwin didn’t say which movie, however, since he mentioned his wife’s pregnancy, there are several possibilities like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ and ‘Thor: The Dark.’ Other projects were in production at the time, but they don’t fit the timeline like those three.

10. Olivia Wilde – Gamora

The actress has been in several action flicks in the past like ‘Tron Legacy’ and ‘Cowboys and Aliens,’ and would’ve fit perfectly with the rest of the cast of MCU. Director James Gunn offered Olivia the role of Gamora for the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movie.

Due to unknown reasons, Wilde turned down the role, and fans got lucky because Zoe Saldana is lovely. Gamora is the green-skinned alien and adopted daughter of Thanos.

9. Rachel McAdams – Pepper Potts

The actress became a worldwide star with her role as Regina George in ‘Mean Girls.’ However, she tends to avoid big-budget movies, opting for low-key and serious roles. She even turned down the role of Pepper Potts, Tony Stark’s girlfriend.

Fortunately, she reconsidered her participation in the Marvel Universe because Rachel was later cast as Doctor Strange’s fellow doctor and love interest. We hope to see more of her in future movies because the actress is a beautiful addition to the series.

8. Tom Cruise – Iron Man

After a decade of seeing Robert Downey Jr. play the role of Tony Stark, it’s hard to imagine anyone else as the billionaire genius. However, Tom Cruise could have played Iron Man because they offered it to him first.

‘Iron Man’ was the first film in this famous franchise, and if another actor played the role, it could have considerably changed everything. Things might not have turned out as well as they did with Downey, and it might not have been as popular.

7. Emily Blunt – Black Widow

The actress is one of the biggest names in the business right now, and this December she will be the new Mary Poppins, which means that she was not fated to be in the Marvel Universe. She was offered two roles for the franchise.

Blunt could’ve played Peggy Carter or Black Widow, but the actress turned both roles down, though no one really knows the reason behind her decision. However, we’re glad because Scarlett Johansson is doing a fantastic job.

6. Jessica Chastain – The Wasp

Chastain has been in amazing movies for the past few years like ‘Tree of Life,’ ‘Zero Dark Thirty,’ ‘Interstellar,’ and ‘The Martian.’ Naturally, she was one of the first choices for the staff of the Marvel Universe. Jessica was open to the role but wanted to be another superhero.

‘We’ve talked about aligning our forces in the future. And here’s the thing with me. If you’re going to be in a superhero movie, you only get one chance. You’re that character forever. So why do a superhero movie and play the boring civilian?’

5. Joaquin Phoenix – The Hulk and Doctor Strange

It seems that Marvel producers really wanted the actor for their franchise because they offered Joaquin two major roles in their films. The actor praised the MCU because he’s a huge fan, but his decision to turn down both roles is not one he regrets.

‘I just don’t know if I want to have the experience of being in them. I’ve read some of those scripts and 75 percent is a description of some asteroid going through space.’ However, the actor was cast as The Joker for DC Comics.

4. Jensen Ackles – Hawkeye

The actor auditioned for Captain America, but when Marvel picked Chris Evans, they offered Ackles the role of Hawkeye. Sadly, the actor had to turn down the role because it conflicted with his schedule for the show ‘Supernatural.’

The role went to Jeremy Renner, but people wondered if Jensen turned down the role because he didn’t want to play a relatively minor role. Hawkeye would’ve fit better with his schedule than Captain American.

3. Jason Momoa – Drax the Destroyer

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was particularly hard to cast, and Marvel wanted Jason Momoa from ‘Game of Thrones’ to play Drax. The actor played several roles with few lines in the past and would’ve been celebrated as the big alien brute.

The actor even tried on the suit, but eventually decided to turn it down because he was looking to play different kinds of characters. Luckily, we will still get to see him as a superhero in DC Comics movies because he’s Aquaman.

2. Johnny Depp – Doctor Strange

The role of Doctor Strange was offered to many actors before they finally cast Benedict Cumberbatch. However, Johnny Depp was Marvel’s first choice for the mystical wizard. Unfortunately, the actor was busy with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ at the time.

It would’ve been fascinating to see the Depp play this role, but we’re glad that the more stoic Cumberbatch took it. Fortunately, we get to see Johnny Depp as another kind of wizard in the ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ films.

1. Joseph Gordon-Levitt – Star-Lord

The actor was offered the main role for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ however, he decided to decline the deal to make a ‘Sin City’ sequel, which was a box office failure. Joseph even admitted that he had made a big mistake.

Levitt audition for the role of Ant-Man and went pretty far, ending up neck-in-neck with Paul Rudd. The scales tipped on Rudd’s side because he helped write the script. The movies would have been amazing with Joseph.

It’s interesting to see how many decisions movie producers have to make even before starting to shoot a movie. We love the MCU cast as it is, but we wonder what things would be like with another actor as our favorite character. If you liked this article, share it with your friends. See you next time!
