Dan Gasby, the husband of Lifestyle guru and restauranteur B. Smith, has faced mixed reactions from fans after revealing he’s taking care of his wife— who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease six years ago—with his new girlfriend, Alex Lerner.
When Dan Gasby, 64, announced last December his relationship with Alex Lerner, 53, while still being legally married to B. Smith, fans were up in arms, accusing the man of taking advantage of his wife’s mental state to do as he pleases with his romantic life.
However, Gasby explained that he’s still Smith’s caregiver, and he and Lerner, who has her own room at the couple’s home, make everything in their power to care for Smith, who is already in the deep states of Alzheimer.
After receiving a myriad of hating comments and even threats on social media, Gasby decided to address the situation with a Facebook post where he wrote:
“I only wish someone in your immediate family has Alzheimer’s so you can see feel and experience the pain of millions of people across this country so you can know first hand what it’s like to care 24/7/365 for someone who can no longer care for themselves!”
“I love my wife, but I can’t let her take away my life!”
He also attended several shows to defend his position, including “The View,” where he revealed that after getting the initial diagnoses, Smith told him, “I want you to go on.”
“I’m not doing anything we didn’t discuss,” he added.
Although fans still have mixed reactions about the situation, Gasby, Lerner, and Smith seem to be happy with their arrangement in pictures shared by the man on Instagram.
The comments show some people that is understanding of the situation, and others that are condemning Gasby and Lerner.
“Love seeing all the happy people! Many blessings from Florida and may your days be full of sunshine,” wrote one fan.
Another added, “Till your feet are in their shoes you’ll never understand. I wish you all a good nights rest. God Bless.”
And a third one said: “I see an abundance of love in this photo. Enjoy all your moments.”
However, others weren’t happy with the sight.
“I wish you’d STOP. Just stop it already! We don’t want to see your indiscretions!” someone wrote.
And another user agreed, “Let’s keep it real!!! ( There's nothing right about what he's doing ...and he knows it. HE'LL HAVE TO ANSWER TO GOD!!”
“Show B respect leave the girlfriend out of the picture,” a third one demanded.
Gasby and Smith have been married for 27 years. He said that after learning his wife’s diagnose, he fought depression and loneliness until he met Lerner, who was a caregiver for her dying father, also diagnosed with Alzheimer.
“Taking care of someone like B, even having someone who is taking care of her periodically...the weight of every minute of the day is a blanket on you,'' he said in an interview with Al Roker for ABC. "And (Lerner) was funny. The most important thing, she was kind. And we became friends, and that friendship got closer and closer."
Lerner has also developed a relationship with Smith. "We find ways to laugh together and find joy in taking walks or doing things together,'' she said. "I would almost say that it's like sisters. It's a very sweet feeling."
"I always joke, we're like a derivation of 'This Is Us' and 'Modern Family,''' Gasby said. "That's what we are.”
