Cardi B Producer DJ Official Killed in LA Shooting Months after Welcoming Son
DJ Official, the Grammy award-winning producer who had worked with artists like Cardi B and Chris Brown, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles on Friday, June 14, multiple outlets confirm.
The DJ, whose real name is Leslie André Wakefield Jr., died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office. He was 26.
KTLA reports that DJ Official was sitting inside a car with another man in the South LA neighborhood of Manchester Square when another vehicle pulled up to them and several shots were fired.
The bullets struck both men, killing DJ Official while the other man is in stable condition, according to what the Los Angeles Police department told the outlet.
NBC Los Angeles reported that DJ Official and his friend were in the car outside the producer’s house when the incident happened; the gunshots startled his grandfather who was mowing the lawn at the time. The yet-to-be-identified shooter also reportedly fled the scene in a black SUV.
WAS HE IN A GANG?
The police are yet to provide a description of the suspected killer or killers but said the shooting might be gang-related, according to KTLA
“All he did was go to work and come home,” the producer's grandfather told NBC Los Angeles. “He didn't belong to no gang or nothing like that.”
“He wasn’t in a gang. He wasn’t into any type of trouble,” DJ Official’s cousin echoed. “He didn’t fight. He wasn’t in the streets like that.”
The police are still investigating the tragedy.
