Jose Baez Was Casey Anthony and Aaron Hernandez's Attorney — What Is Known about Him?

Attorney Jose Baez is the highly renowned and famous lawyer who represented Casey Anthony, Aaron Hernandez, and even Harvey Weinstein. Find out how and why he became so popular and successful.

Only years ago, Attorney Jose Baez was a barely known attorney in a small Florida town called Kissimmee; that, of course, was before he got the one case that catapulted him to international legal stardom.

Jose Baez is an impressively experienced trial lawyer popularly known for championing some of the most unbelievably complicated cases.

With his many years of practice, the attorney is best known for winning an acquittal in the internationally explosive Casey Anthony murder trial. Learn more about this incredible lawyer.

BAEZ'S EARLY YEARS

Born in September 1970 to Puerto Rican parents and raised in Manhattan, New York, Baez had quite a rocky childhood. While he grew up in both Manhattan and, later on, South Florida, he was raised alongside his three sisters by his single mother.

At a young age, Baez's life started to get remarkably complicated. The then-young man dropped out of school when he was in the ninth grade, and by 17, he had already gotten married. Not long after, fatherhood came as he and his partner welcomed a child.

JOURNEY TO BECOMING A LAWYER

As it would many others, fatherhood changed Baez and, thankfully, for the better. In a bid to turn his life around, the young father earned his GED and went on to join the Navy in 1986.

For three years, he was assigned in connection with NATO at Norfolk, Virginia, where he was trained as an intelligence analyst. Upon his return from the Navy in 1989, Baez returned to college.

He attended Miami-Dade Community College but later transferred to Florida State University, where he earned his BA. By 1997, he proudly got his Juris Doctor degree from St. Thomas University School of Law.

While it seemed like Baez was doing a great job of reinventing himself, his past soon came to haunt him. He had already gotten divorced and was failing terribly at keeping up with his child support payments. By then, he declared bankruptcy and was sinking further into financial trouble.

Years after the Casey Anthony case, Baez found himself in the spotlight with her again, but this time, not for positive reasons.

Due to his financial situation, Baez was denied admission to the Florida Bar; hence, he was unable to practice as an attorney. It was not until September 2005 that he was finally admitted into the bar following an impressive financial turnaround.

In those years, while he worked towards his bar admission, Baez worked as an intern at the Miami Dade public defender's office. He also owned several companies, including two bikini companies named Bon Bon bikinis and Brazilian-Bikinis.com.

UNEXPECTED JOURNEY TO FAME

After he was granted his license, Baez went straight to work as his incredible journey to success began. He first came to significant international attention when he took on the case of Casey Anthony.

The unforgettable Casey Anthony-Jose Baez story began when Anthony, a woman charged with her daughter's murder, needed a good lawyer.

Dubbed "the Social Media Trial of the Century," Anthony's case chronicled her nearly facing a death penalty for allegedly killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

Despite the evidence against Anthony being so impenetrable yet circumstantial, Baez worked his way through the prosecutors' charges.

With only six years of experience, he was already being referred to as one of the best lawyers in America as he successfully poked and fished out the holes in the prosecutors' case. After a long time in court going back and forth, Anthony was acquitted and freed from jail.

THE JOSE BAEZ-AARON HERNANDEZ STORY

Aaron Hernandez was a football player who was a convicted murderer. For three years, he played for the New England Patriots until his career came to a screeching halt following his arrest and conviction for murder.

Throughout his life, Hernandez had a myriad of run-ins with the law. He was investigated in connection with a double homicide that allegedly took place in July 2012.

With Baez as his attorney, Hernandez was indicted but was later cleared as the prosecutor's case against him had many inconsistencies and fallible plots.

Hernandez was also charged with first-degree murder in addition to five gun-related charges after his friend, Odin Lloyd was found dead by gunshots about a mile from his house.

In 2015, he was found guilty of murder in the first degree. His tenure with the Patriots was subsequently terminated as he was arrested and jailed.

Baez began an appeal process for the Odin Lloyd murder conviction, but sadly, Hernandez died while in prison. His death was ruled a suicide.

WHERE IS BAEZ TODAY?

Apart from Anthony and Hernandez, Baez went on to have many more high-profile cases. Some of Jose Baez's clients and high-profile cases include Ex-Cantor Fitzgerald Bond Trader, David Demos, Bobbi Kristina Brown's boyfriend Nick Gordon, and former co-founder of Miramax, Harvey Weinstein. Baez was later taken off the Harvey Weinstein case.

Years after the Casey Anthony case, Baez found himself in the spotlight with her again, but this time, not for positive reasons.

Anthony filed for bankruptcy and included an affidavit in which she alleged a sexual relationship with Baez before her case went to trial. Baez strongly denied the allegations.

In 2017, he was cast in the Fox reality show, "You the Jury." Jose Baez's wife is reportedly Lorena Baez, and alongside many other recognitions under his belt, he continues to forge ahead in his career as an attorney.
