The British Royal Family's romance has been in the news for decades, and Prince William and Kate Middleton's relationship is no different.

The Prince and Princess of Wales remain one of the world's most famous couples to date. They have quite an intriguing love story with many twists and turns. William and Middleton first met in 2001 while studying history at Scotland's University of St Andrews.

The couple began dating soon after their meeting; however, they kept their relationship out of the public eye. Despite their secrecy, the pair broke up in 2007 but eventually reunited again.

On April 29, 2011, William and Middleton walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey in London. Years after their wedding, the couple is still standing strong, and the public could not be more impressed.

Royal Biographers Tina Brown and Andrew Morton have given more insights into William and Kate's private life and relationship. Here are more details.

William and Middleton's relationship became public in 2004 after they were photographed together skiing with a group of friends on the ski slopes at Klosters in Switzerland.

The lovebirds left many talking about what seemed like a perfect romance. However, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's relationship was far from perfect out of the public eye.

In the book "William & Catherine: Their Lives, Their Wedding," the writer, Andrew Morton, sheds more light on the couple's complicated relationship, especially William's treatment of Kate. According to the Royal biographer:

"Obstinate and strong-willed, William could be an overwhelming presence, and at times, Kate felt taken for granted, treated like a servant rather than his girlfriend."

Apart from his insight, Morton revealed that William and Middleton's friends also confirmed how complex the couple's relationship was and how the Prince treated the Duchess. Choong, one of the lovebirds' friends, confessed thus:

"He could be flip and curt with her. She didn't like it when he ignored her and got into conversation with someone as though she wasn't there. He expected Kate to run after him, and the longer they knew each other, the more he seemed to keep her on a tight leash."

"It was an uneasy relationship. They were always in and out," another friend relayed. Morton noted that William's treatment of Middleton was due to his inability to give the Duchess the level of emotional commitment and support she needed at the time. As time progressed, their relationship became more turbulent.

The Royal biographer recalled an incident that showed how tense William and Middleton's relationship was. It happened when William visited "Purple," the nightclub next to Chelsea Football Stadium.

According to Morton, the Duke was seen dancing with numerous young ladies, none of which looked like Middleton. Nevertheless, these treatments never made Middleton reconsider her stance with William.

She remained a "reliable and true" girlfriend, who felt the Duke was lucky to date her. "He's lucky to be going out with me," Middleton told one of her friends.

WILLIAMS NEVER THOUGHT OF KATE AS "THE ONE"

Following the publicity of their relationship, Middleton and her family were under scrutiny from the press. They became a topic of discussion, as they had no links to nobility.

It was revealed that whenever the Duchess entered an airport or the Paddington station, photographers would use expletives on her. However, Middleton decided to handle all the hate by being polite.

Eventually, a few months later, Middleton's parents rented a house in Perthshire during the Holidays to get away from the scrutiny, and the Duchess followed suit.

While Middleton was in Scotland, William remained in Sandringham. However, the Duke was expected to spend the New Year's Holiday with his girlfriend.

So, Middleton's mom made preparations for William's arrival, but he never showed up. The latter had been having second thoughts about their future and decided to stay back to tell his father and Queen Elizabeth about his doubts.

Although they were disappointed, the Queen and Prince Charles had advised William not to hurry into anything. The latter said it was unfair to expose Middleton to so much press harassment unless engagement was imminent. Brown wrote:

"It is an understatement to say the Queen was skittish about any marriage that might fall."

So severely had she wanted William to be sure he had the right woman that she had reversed every traditional rule of royal romantic engagement, lending them cottages to fling in, allowing them to live together before marriage at St. Andrews, and even permitting them to stay together at Clarence Home," Brown wrote.

Indeed, William's no-show affected their relationship. The press had been awaiting an engagement, but none was forthcoming, leaving Middleton humiliated. By March 2007, the pair appeared bored of each other in photos.

"It did not need to be pointed out to William (though the press did) that he was fast losing his cool factor and hair and turning into his dad," Brown wrote.

A source admitted that William's hesitation was because "he never thought of Middleton as the one." "He was too 'too young to settle down and wanted to throw himself into his career as an army officer," the source added.

On the other hand, the Duke allegedly complained that "all the fun had gone," adding that "he did not want to be nailed down." "It is hard not to feel for him. Everything else in his life had been nailed down from birth," Brown concluded.

BREAKUP BOMB ON THE PHONE

William and Middleton's relationship hit the rocks by 2007, as they spent less time with each other. William had joined the Household Calvary in Windsor while the Duchess was busy with work.

The pair's busy schedules kept them far away, eventually leading to dents in their romance. William was also rumored to have been in relationships with other women. For example, a snapshot showed him wrapping his arms around a beautiful blonde student, who would describe William as the perfect gentleman.

At the same time, the Duke of Cambridge's other hand held the breasts of a Brazilian brunette. Another rumor was that the Duke of Cambridge was romantically involved with a "different, well connected young woman."

All of these claims and revelations made Middleton feel frustrated. One of her friends explained that William was not giving her enough attention as far as the Duchess was concerned.

Later on, the pair would shock the tabloids after news of their split made the headlines. In the book "The Palace Papers: The Sunday Times Best Seller," Royal Biographer Tina Brown disclosed William and Middleton's breakup details.

Brown revealed that the Duchess was at work at the Jigsaw office when she got a call from William. Rather than give Middleton hope about their future, the Duke of Cambridge released the "break up bomb" on the phone.

Middleton was so devastated that she left a meeting, went to the parking lot, and began pacing around. She and William spoke for about an hour before the call ended. Unfortunately, none of Middleton's tears could change the Duke's mind.

Frustrated, Middleton traveled to Bucklebury. Afterward, her mom took her on a trip to an art show in Dublin, where the Duchess could take pictures and forget about the breakup.

KATE, AFTER THE BREAKUP STRATEGY, WORKED OUT

Middleton was determined to get her man back after their breakup, so she devised a "comeback strategy." The Duchess planned to spend time with her ex's former girlfriend to make William paranoid about her lack of jealousy.

Next, she would "revise her views on press intrusion." Finally, she would often photograph herself doing the activities mentioned above. In a short time, Middleton began implementing her comeback strategy.

With help from her sister, the Duchess began taking pictures while donning tight and revealing outfits. Then, she signed up for an all-women dragon boat crew called Sisterhood. In no time, paparazzi began to surround Middleton to get a picture of her good looks, and William became jealous.

"By June, it started to dawn on William that his ex was as much of a catch as he was. Beautiful, self-assured, and embossed now with a royal sheen; Kate could have become the wife of a Duke or a billionaire in a high grove minute," Brown's book explained.

After a few weeks, Middleton's plan worked, and William returned, begging. "She held out, savoring his contrition, before finally accepting an invitation to the end of training Bovington camp "Freakin Naughty" party, where she rocked the room like a sexy nurse." Brown wrote.

"The heir to the throne was said to have followed her around all night like a "lost puppy,'" Brown wrote. After only a few weeks following their split, William and Middleton were finally back together. On July 1, 2007, during the anniversary concert for Princess Diana at Wembley Stadium, the "Middleton family" were spotted in the royal box.

After William popped the question, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's relationship remained intact and went to the next level in November 2010.
