When a mother fell on hard times, she didn't think twice before sacrificing everything to save her son, who was battling cancer. She was on the brink of losing everything when a kind stranger noticed her selflessness and decided to do something.

A mother's love for her child is unconditional and never-ending. A pat on the back, a warm hug, or even a smile from our moms can be powerful enough to uplift our low spirits and brighten our gloomy days. Indeed, there's no way to measure a mom's love because it's all-encompassing and boundless.

At AmoMama, we love celebrating mothers and sharing stories that shed light on their sacrificial and selfless nature from time to time. The story we're sharing today is a beautiful continuation of that theme.

A KIND-HEARTED NURSE

Cynthia Robinson was a Licensed Practical Nurse at the 21st Century Oncology Cancer Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her job required caring for patients and meeting their families; that was how she met one family that left a lasting impact on her mind and heart.

She noted that she met Basil Dallas, a young patient receiving radiation treatments at 21st Century Oncology, and his family. Robinson recalled the meeting with Basil and his mother, Marcia Duncan, in these words:

"I have the position of talking to each patient to explain the possible side effects of radiation, and that's when his mother just opened up, them being homeless (sic)."

TOTALLY RELATABLE

After hearing Duncan's story, Robinson said something tugged at her heartstrings, and she could somehow relate to it. She further added:

"I have one son, two daughters. I can't imagine not having anywhere for my children to be."

As a mother of three children, Robinson said she couldn't ignore Duncan's struggles and felt compelled to help make things better for her. So, she talked to her co-workers, and together, they managed to find a motel where Duncan and her children could stay for two weeks.

LENDING A HELPING HAND

But despite finding a temporary place for Duncan and her kids, Robinson still felt the need to do something more. "I asked my co-workers, 'Do you think if I contacted the Surprise Squad that they might help,'" recollected Robinson. Interestingly enough, that was exactly what she did in 2015.

What followed next was something even Robinson didn't see coming.

A few days later, the FOX5 Surprise Squad responded to Robinson's request and showed up outside 21st Century Oncology. Soon afterward, Cynthia took the entire crew to the motel where Duncan was staying with her two boys.

A HUGE SURPRISE

Meanwhile, Cassandra Jones from the FOX5 Surprise Squad mentioned that even Robinson didn't know what they had in store for Duncan. When they reached the motel, Cynthia knocked on the door of the motel room and uttered, "I just want them to be as excited as I am."

Duncan answered the door and invited Robinson and Jones inside. After that, Jones introduced herself as part of the FOX5 Surprise Squad, pointed to Robinson, and continued, "And this wonderful lady over here told us all about you and all about your son Basil."

Jones then talked to Basil, who told her he was 17 years old and diagnosed with a brain tumor. He described how he had been having headaches and crying all the time because of the excruciating pain.

A MOTHER'S ORDEAL

Duncan told Jones that she took Basil to the Los Angeles Children's Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Basil's younger brother, Shamarie Dallas, shared that when he saw his older brother writhing in pain, he couldn't control his emotions and broke down his tears. Basil also said:

"I was actually grateful that I'd rather go through it than have one of [my siblings] go through it."

Shamarie explained that his mom had been trying to find a job for months with no luck, and he could see how hard it was for her to go through everything alone. He also noted that their family had no support other than Robinson.

"HAVE FAITH"

After hearing their story, Jones took Duncan and her boys to meet someone special. On the way, Duncan told her that she would have to leave the motel soon, and given that she had no other place to live, she hoped to find a job that would somehow change her situation.

Robinson, who was well aware of Duncan's ordeal and had nominated her family for the surprise, expressed:

"I always tell people to hang on, have faith. My mom died. Three weeks later, my step-son died of cancer. Three weeks after that, my husband passed away. I've been there. You can make it."

When the FOX5 Surprise Squad's van stopped, Jones introduced Duncan and her boys to one of their sponsors and the owner of United Nissan, Don Forman.

"WELCOME HOME"

What followed next was something even Robinson didn't see coming. "Your story has really inspired us, and we know you've fallen across some hard times. So while Basil recovers for the next 12 months, we'd like to welcome you to your new home," said Forman after greeting Duncan.

Tears streamed down this mother's face as she struggled to absorb Forman's words and sneaked a peek at the building in front of her eyes, with balloons and a sign that read, "Welcome Home." Robinson stood in one corner, extremely shocked and surprised to see what was happening.

Duncan opened the door and stared around in disbelief. She proceeded to hug her benefactor, Robinson, and the two women shared an emotional moment. In the background, Basil and Shamarie could be seen smiling from ear to ear. Duncan also hugged Forman and thanked him.

A SELF-SACRIFICING MOTHER

Next, Basil and Shamarie were given a tour of the new home, including their rooms. They also met Stephen Zimmerman of the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, who told them he was touched by their story and gave them a special invitation to watch his game.

The family was then shown Duncan's room, and Jones told her she finally had a cozy bed to sleep in comfortably. A little while later, Basil became emotional while recounting all the times his mother had sacrificed everything for him and their family. He stated:

"It's the worst feeling in the world to know that your mom is struggling because she has us. Sometimes I think that if she didn't have us, she'd be better off. Sometimes it really gets to me, but I don't show it. That's why I have to do what I have to do to make her proud."

A HEART-TOUCHING STORY

The FOX5 Surprise Squad gathered in front of Duncan's new home one last time and exclaimed, "Welcome Home," A teary-eyed Duncan also expressed: "No matter what, keep your head up high and keep your faith because, with faith, all things are possible."

After surprising Duncan and her boys with their new home, Dave Hall from FOX5 invited Robinson and United Nissan's Jon Simon to share their thoughts. Simon said that the United Nissan family was moved by Duncan's story and had no choice but to help.

He said that they also raised another $2,000 for the Duncan family. Hall asked Robinson why she wrote to them, to which she said that she was touched to see how the Surprise Squad had changed people's lives, and she thought Duncan also deserved something similar.

Robinson also told Hall that Basil and Shamarie had started school, and Basil was doing reasonably well health-wise. Then, Hall asked Robinson if Duncan had managed to find a job, to which she replied that Duncan had applied to a place and was waiting for her third interview round.

Undoubtedly, this story teaches us that kind people are all around us, and every effort is rewarded, sooner or later. Duncan sacrificed everything to save her son's life, and thanks to Robinson, she was finally able to get something in return.
