Michael Ray was the proud father of twin boys, but unbeknownst to anyone, one of his little boys had a health condition. Tragically, baby Charlie Ray passed away at only three months old, and the devastating loss held Michael back for years.

Michael had lost his purpose and thought nothing would end the pain and despair he felt. However, God had other plans, and his new enthusiasm for life came unexpectedly.

The Father Struggled for Years

Michael wanted to believe there was light at the end of the tunnel, and he shared: "I had struggled for several years in going, 'God, there's something more, what do you want me to do?'"

The special interaction got Michael thinking and led him to a life-changing purpose. He was curious about how a smile could affect a random stranger, so he did something brave and exciting.

Thanks to someone special, he went from a time of merely existing to a life of meaning. His daughter Maddie was the catalyst that opened up a whole new adventure.

A Life-Changing Smile

Maddie had Down syndrome and autism, and she was non-verbal. Despite never speaking any words, she was able to inspire her father. Something about her brought light in the darkest times—it was Maddie's beautiful smile that made all the difference.

The Kentucky dad and daughter had no idea how their lives would change because of Maddie's visible expression of joy. A moment between Michael and his daughter inspired him to start a mission in his local Louisville area. The dad said:

"I turned around for years and was like 'do you love daddy, hey do you love me?' And she would just smile, and that's how I knew."

His Mission

The special interaction got Michael thinking and led him to a life-changing purpose. He was curious about how a smile could affect a random stranger, so he did something brave and exciting. In 2018, he started Smile Project Louisville.
