Amber alert issued for New York child, whose mom's body found in bag
Selena Hidalgo-Calderon’s dead body was found recently in the woods. This has prompted the police to issue an Amber Alert for the woman’s missing toddler.
According to Wayne County authorities, they are hopeful that Owen Hidalgo-Calderon will be found, but they have no faith that he will be alive. The boy and his mother both went missing on May 16, 2018.
Police in western New York have reported that they found Selena Hidalgo-Calderon’s dead body in the woods, stuffed in a plastic bag. They are now searching for the 18-year-old’s missing 14-month-old boy Owen Hidalgo-Calderon.
A statewide Amber Alert was issued for the toddler this past Friday. Owen is said to have brown eyes and short brown hair

He weighs about 30 lbs., stands around two feet tall and is known to need asthma medication. His dress code is unknown.
The toddler was last seen on May 16 which was two days after his birthday. At the time, he was with his mother.
Selena’s body was found on Wednesday partially buried between two logs and covered with soil and branches on the Joy Road farm in Sodus. This was where she and her boyfriend, Edward Reyes, 25, lived and worked.
‘The child was taken under circumstances that lead the police to believe that he is in imminent danger of serious harm and/or death.’
Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts said at a press conference on Thursday that Reyes, who is from Mexico, was later seen on a hunter’s trail. He was spotted traveling in and out of the woods with a shovel.
He was arrested on Wednesday night on charges of tampering with physical evidence. Reyes is being held on $25,000 bail in the Wayne County Jail pending a court appearance on May 29.
“[He] stated he removed the deceased body of Selena from the home and buried her in the woods behind the home,” Virts said. The Sheriff clarified that the suspect hadn’t admitted to committing the murder.
He also never shared if he knew where the toddler was. Reyes is not Owen’s father as the parent is Guatemalan and in Guatemala.
He has been notified about the boy’s disappearance. Police are investigating Selena’s death as a homicide and “absolutely” believe she was “murdered.”
However, the Monroe County Medical Examiner Office has not yet released a cause of death. A motive for the homicide hasn’t been released but family and friends told police that Selena had sought refuge for domestic abuse in the past.
Virts said in a press conference on Friday that they’ve had 145 people from multiple organizations looking for Owen. “As a grandfather and as a father, my heart tells me that we will find young Owen. But my experience in law enforcement, I believe this will be a recovery,” Virts added.

He stated that he hoped the boy was alive but didn’t believe it because of the long time period. According to the Workers’ Center of Central New York, Selena has been in the US since November 2016.
Spokesperson Rebecca Fuentes told The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle that Selena was from Guatemala and was seeking asylum. Selena’s mother, Estela Calderon, was said to be grieving the heartbreaking loss.
