FACING RACISM TO BREAK INTO STARDOM

Guyton's dreams about becoming a country music artist began when she was nine years old and saw 10-year-old LeAnn Rimes singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at a Texas Rangers baseball game.

She was shocked that a girl her age could sound like a grown woman. Still, she was sure she could do it, too, and she did it.

However, releasing her debut album was much harder than expected. Apart from experiencing racism and sexism in the country music industry, Guyton tried to be something she wasn't for too long.

The "Remember Her Name" songstress wanted to be a girl-next-door type that everyone could relate to. She hid a side of herself, trying to make people feel safe and comfortable around her.

It negatively impacted her career and life, and she needed almost ten years to release her first album. Her career changed when "Black Like Me" went viral in June 2020.

Mickey Guyton's song was supposed to debut earlier that year, but she postponed the release date because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The song went public when protests and racial tensions over George Floyd's murder peaked. Guyton confessed she had tears of joy and sadness about her tune's success. She explained:

"I keep thinking, 'I don't deserve this.' There's also guilt when I see the pain other people are feeling as their eyes open and see the oppression that I've experienced."

Guyton made history with "Black Like Me" by becoming the first Black woman nominated in the Best Country Solo Performance category. She also became the first Black woman to host and perform at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Even after all her accomplishments, Mickey Guyton's ethnicity keeps being criticized on social media. Luckily, she doesn't let naysayers get into her head, and she has a supportive family by her side.

MARRYING HER BEST FRIEND'S STEPBROTHER

Mickey Guyton's husband is Grant Savoy, a Hawaiian lawyer, and co-founder at Solouki | Savoy, LLP. He graduated from California State University, Northridge, and then attended Southwestern Law School.

His academic performance was so high that he was named to the Dean's List and graduated at the top of his class. Before joining forces with Shoham Solouki, Savoy worked as an associate attorney focused on employment wage, hour class, and mass actions.

Savoy and Guyton met in 2010 through one of Guyton's best friends, who is also Savoy's stepsister. The couple started dating right away, and Savoy popped the question in 2013.

However, the start of their relationship was far from perfect, and the singer has shared some details about it on social media.

They love, fight, cry, slam doors, and have thought they cannot be together anymore. Still, they "choose to love each other through it all" every day. She added:

"When this man walked into my life, I was broken. I put him through hell because I was so hurt. But he persisted and loved me through all of my imperfections and transgressions."

Savoy has consistently put his wife on a pedestal. He has shown her she is worth it even when she thinks she doesn't deserve it.

Mickey Guyton and Grant Savoy married in front of 23 friends and family members at the Kauai Marriott Resort in Kauai, Hawaii, on June 26, 2017. It was supposed to be a family vacation, but they turned it into an intimate wedding.

Savoy was born in Los Angeles, California. Still, he has a Hawaiian family, so their reception needed to include a luau – a traditional feast with music, dances, and performances.

Guyton, who put on a David's Bridal dress, confessed that the entire day was "beautiful and intimate," mainly because she couldn't stop laughing and crying.

RAISING A BABY

In February 2021, Guyton and Savoy welcomed their first child, Grayson. She announced the baby news on social media, describing the delivery as the most challenging and beautiful thing in her life.

Nine months later, the family returned to the hospital after Grayson got a stomach bug. His condition was so severe that he ended up in the ICU.

Guyton revealed that her family doctor helped them secure a bed at the hospital because most places were maxed out and understaffed due to nurse shortages.

Luckily, the pediatrician in charge of Grayson stayed by his side the whole time he was in the emergency room. They quickly discovered the problem and developed a plan to heal him.

The singer added that seeing her son in such a frail state was "terrifying." Although he was dehydrated, weak, and lost weight because he couldn't retain any liquid, his lab tests showed he was "headed in the right direction."

Guyton also thanked her fans and followers for their kind messages, adding that her son felt every prayer lifted over him during his time in the ICU.

Two weeks after Grayson's initial hospitalization, Guyton said he had been released from the hospital and was doing much better.

From the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, Mickey Guyton pointed out that she couldn't wait to return home and be with her family. It was her first Thanksgiving as a mom, so she was mainly thankful for her family.
