Faith Hill grew up aware that she was adopted, but she always thought there was a conspiracy about her origin. Her parents, who adopted her just a few days after being born, lied about her biological mother and the reason she gave her up for adoption. She only found out the truth after meeting her birth mother.

In all the years she graced the spotlight with hit country songs such as "This Kiss" and "I Need You," Faith Hill knew she was adopted and was always open about how the experience shaped her.

To date, she remains grateful to her adoptive parents for giving her a chance to grow up in such a loving family. Nevertheless, for Hill, the adoption always left more questions than answers growing up. The singer had numerous questions concerning her origin and place in the world.

Hill was adopted only days after she was born. Her adoptive parents already had two older sons and raised their new daughter in Star, Mississippi. Her parents were attentive and candid about her journey, which brought about a sense of comfort and belonging.

Why Did Faith Hill Start Looking For Her Biological Parents?

Despite growing up in a loving home, Hill was always curious about her origin and roots. She could not help noticing how different she was from her family, which made her curious.

She says while she grew up in a hardworking and great family, she was always free-spirited and was entirely outside what her family was.

She soon realized she did not know anyone she was biologically related to, which raised the possibility of her adoption story being a conspiracy. She shared:

"I used to think there was some kind of conspiracy that I must be the daughter of one of my aunts. And of course, I used to dream I was Elvis' daughter."

There was also the fact that no one in her family liked music except her. At 19, she went through an uncertain period in her life when she was lost and felt like a misfit. All those factors combined spiked her curiosity and set her on a journey of discovery.

Faith Met Her Biological Mom after Her Adoptive Mother Lied about Her

She began her search for her biological parents in 1990 but soon faced some hurdles. At the time, adoption records were often inaccessible.

Luckily, one of her brothers helped her track down a lead. With her family supporting her, Hill located her birth mother and described the moment as matted with lucky twists and divine intervention.

Even as the excitement of finally meeting her biological mother built, Hill debated whether she was ready for such a surreal moment. She ultimately went ahead with the plan and met her biological mother face-to-face in 1993.

The first time she met her biological mother was an emotional experience. She recalls just staring at her mother because she had never seen anybody share so many similarities with her. She recalls:

"The first time I met my biological mother, I just stared at her. I'd never seen anybody who looked anything like me. It was the awe of seeing someone that you actually came from. It fills something."

Meeting her mother helped her explain her interest in music after discovering that her biological grandmother and aunt had been choir members and her mother was an artist. She also learned that she had a full brother.

Unfortunately, she and her mother did not become close. However, it was not all in vain, as some facts came to light after meeting her. For years, Hill's adoptive parents had made her believe that she was given up for adoption because she was the result of her mother's affair with a married man.

However, as it turned out, the truth was that her mother had been unmarried when she fell pregnant with Hill and thus chose to put her up for adoption. As fate would have it, her biological parents later married and welcomed a son, Zack, who they raised together.

Sadly, Hill never had a chance to meet her biological father as he had long perished in a car accident. Luckily she got to meet her brother, Zack, and forge a relationship with him.

Even though she and her biological mother did not become close after meeting, Hill appreciated that her mother, who died in 2007, had done her best to give her a better chance at life. The singer's first husband, Daniel Hill, says the experience was a profound and life-altering one for the singer.

Faith and Her Husband Bonded over Similar Experiences

Hill's story and journey may have been unique, but she would soon discover that her second and current husband, country music legend Tim McGraw, had an eerily similar story to hers.

While he was not adopted, he discovered at 11 that the man he always considered a dad was not his biological father. McGraw remembers Horace Smith as the man that inducted him into country music, adding that the two often took long drives in his 18-wheel truck listening to cassettes of George Jones and Merle Haggard.

Then one day, he happened upon his birth certificate in a drawer that indicated his biological father's name as Tug McGraw, a baseball player.

The following year, McGraw and his mom drove to Houston to meet his dad, but he wouldn't see them. McGraw remembers yelling at him as he warmed up in the bullpen, but he ignored him.

He never saw his dad again until he was 18. He says it did not bother him much until he got older. And while they grew close in the senior McGraw's final years, they never talked about why he wanted nothing to do with his son.

McGraw and Hill's childhoods may have been different, but they found common ground in the similarities of their origins. "Although our stories are very different, there was a missing link within our souls that we both related to." He says.
