The Grandmother's Car Broke Down

Each day, Gordon embarked on a 2.7-mile journey to and from work, facing whatever weather conditions came her way. Her once reliable green Jeep Liberty, her only mode of transportation, broke down in 2022.

With limited financial resources, she had no choice but to walk to her job at VC's Fresh Marketplace in Waterford Township.

She made a living slicing meat and serving salads behind the deli counter, and despite her lengthy commute, Gordon never wavered, pushing through with a determined spirit, saying:

"I didn’t have a choice. I had to have a positive attitude."

She Found the Money by Chance

Gordon's life took an unexpected turn on a bitterly cold afternoon during her 5:30 p.m. walk home in January 2023. She passed by a gas station to grab a bite to eat when fate intervened in the form of a discarded Ziploc bag on the ground.

As she stooped to pick it up, she was overwhelmed by the weight of its contents and knew that it was no small sum. The cash's sheer magnitude could have instantly transformed her life, yet she refused to open the bag.

Her First Thoughts After Finding the Bag

As Gordon's eyes fell upon the mysterious bag of cash, her first instinct was not to keep it. She recognized the importance of doing what was right.

Overwhelmed with a sense of responsibility, she contacted the police. The grandmother was determined to return the money to its rightful owner and felt relief after handing it over to an officer.

The Rightful Owners of the Money

The mystery surrounding the origin of the cash discovered by Gordon was soon solved when she received a call just two hours later. The voice on the other end of the line revealed the money, about $14,780, belonged to a couple who had just tied the knot.

According to Police Chief Dan Keller, the couple was beyond grateful for the grandmother's unwavering honesty, and their heartfelt expressions of thanks left no doubt in her mind that she had done the right thing. Keller also applauded Gordon and said:

"She didn’t hesitate, she didn't question it. This doesn’t happen very often, that someone finds a large sum of money and turns it in ... She didn’t give it a second thought."

The Grandmother Did Not See Herself as a Hero

Gordon explained that her decision to return the lost fortune was not one of heroism but rather an instinctive response to what she knew was right. The notion of keeping something that wasn't hers never crossed her mind.

But while grandmother humbly believed she hadn't done anything special, her actions were nothing short of remarkable to those who know the value of honesty.

A Generous Reward for the Grandma

Gordon's actions touched the hearts of many in the community, and they were determined to show their appreciation for her selflessness. Stacy Connell, the wife of the police officer who responded to Gordon's call, was deeply moved by the woman's integrity.

Visiting Her Grandchildren and Making Memories

With shiny new wheels at her disposal, Gordon could treasure more special moments with her grandchildren, quickly making the 25-minute trip to them.

Fueled by excitement, she hopped behind the wheel and drove straight to their home after getting her vehicle. She was delighted because the blessing allowed her to share many memorable moments with her grandkids. Gordon explained:

"My grandson is 13, and he plays hockey. And my granddaughter is 11, and she does gymnastics; I haven’t seen her play or do gymnastics yet. So that's going to be very important that I get to see her do that."
