Al Pacino had been in several relationships, some long enough that he "was almost married." Still, none of them ended in front of the altar. Now at 83, he is expecting his fourth child out of wedlock.

Al Pacino's tally of romantic partners is as extensive as his Hollywood career history. The Oscar winner's relationships included A-list celebrities, including Jill Clayburgh, who he dated from 1967 until they broke up in 1972.

His romance with Diane Keaton, which started after they both starred as on-screen lovers in "The Godfather," ended after she gave him an ultimatum for marriage.

Pacino's high-profile relationship with Beverly D'Angelo resulted in the welcoming of twins Anton James and Olivia Rose. Though he made it known that he wanted the "Vacation" star to be the mother of his children, the former couple eventually split.

Currently, Pacino is dating his 53-year-younger girlfriend, Noorah Alfallah, with whom he expects his soon-to-be fourth child.

Even though he has experienced many of what relationships have to offer, Pacino is yet to tie the knot - a decision he has been adamant about.

1. Al Pacino Thought Marriage Was Complicated

In Lawrence Grobel's book "Al Pacino," the actor admitted that he didn't know why he hadn't married. "It seems simple to me, but I guess it's more complicated than I admit to myself. There were a couple of times maybe I could have done it, and I sort of feel I should have, at least once. Maybe I don't care about marriage. Maybe I don't believe in it," he said.

2. High Divorce Rates & His Parents' Split influenced Al Pacino's Idea of Marriage

When pushed on whether he believes in marriage, the actor shared, "On that subject, I am unclear. My mother and father didn't make it together. There's a high divorce rate." He further explained that his father had been married five times.

3. He Believed Commitment Was Not the Same as Marriage

The "House of Gucci" actor once elaborated on his definition of commitment in romance, saying it has become outdated. "Look at 'commit' in the dictionary. Marriage is not part of the definition," he explained.

Having made the differentiation, Pacino disagrees with the weight officiating a relationship carries.

"I don't get the officialdom behind it, the law behind it. I don't believe that's a commitment," he declared.

4. Al Pacino Prioritized Having Kids over Marriage

The award-winning actor proclaimed he's "not married to not being married." However, if he had kids, he probably would marry because he loved children. While dating Clayburgh, Pacino parried questions about marriage on more than one occasion but always entertained the idea of having kids.

"I don't entertain thoughts of marriage. If it comes, it'll come. I've always known I'd want children, but it's been with me a lot. I even think about adopting. I'd have ten kids, make 'em all actors too." His non-answer continued when he said, "Yes, I'd like to marry Jill and have children, or maybe we'd adopt them. Or it's possible we'd have children without marrying."

Pacino previously noted that he wouldn't rule out marriage but mostly looked forward to having kids. "Why not? I'd like to think I'll be a better father for having waited," he added.

He became a first-time dad at 49 in 1989. He welcomed his daughter Julie Pacino, who followed in his footsteps in the entertainment industry, with acting coach Jan Trantt.

5. Al Pacino Said Marriage Was Just a State of Mind

The soon-to-be father of four revealed he almost married "a couple of times" but didn't know what happened. He said some of his past long-standing relationships felt like marriages. He noted:

"Why didn't I propose? I hate to say this, but marriage is a state of mind, not a contract. When I think about law and marriage, I ask myself, 'How did the cops get in on this?' To me, marriage is tied up with my idea of commitment, which is an emotional feeling."

Al Pacino Expertly Evaded Talks of Marriage in the Presence of His Former Lovers

In the '70s, Pacino dated actress Marthe Keller after meeting on the set of Sydney Pollack's "Bobby Deerfield." She'd been single for years before meeting Pacino. Keller showered him with praises and said they'd been similar in some ways.

However, when she touched on the topic of marriage, Pacino dodged the subject. Despite that, Keller kept a wedding dress in her closet because "a girl doesn't know when she'll need one," she stated.

In 2016, when reporters asked him in front of his then-girlfriend Lucila Sola whether he'll get married, the octogenarian only had a laugh for an answer.
