On the evening of December 9, tragedy struck as 16-year-old Samuel Johnson, Jr., lost his life in a heartbreaking incident in the 3900 block of Inner Perimeter Road. At around 6:15 p.m., Johnson, a compassionate teenager, noticed a dog that had been struck by an unknown vehicle. Displaying empathy, he approached to aid the injured animal.

However, in a cruel turn of events, a second vehicle passing through the area reportedly struck Johnson as he valiantly attempted to rescue the injured dog. Shockingly, the vehicle that hit the teenager allegedly did not stop.

The unfolding events were witnessed by another passerby, who, upon noticing a deceased dog in the roadway, decided to stop and check on the situation. To her dismay, she discovered Johnson lying in the grass median, accompanied by another injured dog.

Through the evidence meticulously collected at the scene, the offender's vehicle has been reportedly identified as a dark-colored Dodge Charger, manufactured between the years 2011 and 2014.

Notably, the vehicle is expected to exhibit damage to the driver's side front bumper. The last known sighting of the vehicle was in the vicinity of Inner Perimeter Road and North Forrest Street Extension.

Chief Leslie Manahan expressed deep concern and urgency in seeking justice for this senseless act. In a statement, he stated, “We are asking for the public's assistance in locating this vehicle and offender. It is unexplainable the callousness and disregard for human life that this offender has shown, by hitting this teenage victim and leaving him."

"My heart breaks for the family and friends of Mr. Johnson, who deserve answers as to why this happened to their loved one. If you know something, please say something. Our officers and detectives will not stop until they hold this offender accountable," Chief Manahan concluded.

At the time, the Valdosta Police Department appealed to the public, urging anyone with information about the dark-colored Dodge Charger or details about the offender to come forward.

According to a recent update, there has been a significant breakthrough in the investigation. The driver of the vehicle involved in the tragic incident is said to have been identified, and officers have successfully seized the vehicle from his residence.

The Valdosta Touchdown Club also mourned the loss of their cherished athlete whose life was cut short in the heart-shattering incident. "[Sam] was an amazing young man who was taken from us way too soon. As our hearts are broken by the sudden loss, please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time," read the profound note.
