“[He was shot] point blank, it was a horrific thing to have to watch. My entire world came tumbling down in the matter of a second.”

Officer RJ Young, ABC News, March 28, 2014.

The suspect was killed in the gunfire according to Animal Channel, but Bruno managed to stop him from hurting anybody else.

Bruno, a six-year-veteran of the Anaheim, California Police Force, was immediately rushed to the hospital.

A police escort quickly shut down roads and cleared the roads to the animal hospital, which helped Bruno get to the ER, according to ABC News.

The dog went through surgery to remove to the bullet that was lodged in his lung. According to Animal Channel, the bullet had, in fact, miraculously missed his heart.

After his surgery, Bruno had to recover from a shattered jaw. He had to go through one more surgery before his breathing tube could be taken off, according to Animal Channel.

He finally reunited with his best friend a week after surgery, and his joy was immense.

Officer Young got a new partner after Bruno was injured in 2014, a two-year-old German Shepherd named Yukon, according to Animal Channel.

ABC News added that officer Young planned to officially adopt Bruno and also take care of his medical costs.
