C-SPAN saw the clip reach the highest number of views in just over 12 hours. The actual figure is above a million.

On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) made her first speech in the House of Representatives. There she berated President Donald Trump for the shutdown.

The US is currently under a partial federal shutdown because Trump refuses to sign off on the nation's spending unless he gets $5, 7 billion for a border wall between the US and Mexico. So far, Democrats have refused to yield to his request.

The shutdown has left thousands of federal workers without pay. Ocasio-Cortez’s speech became C-SPAN's most-viewed Twitter video of remarks by a House lawmaker.

Her clip had 1.16 million views in just over 12 hours and now it has over 3 million. This figure was shared on Thursday afternoon by C-SPAN's communications director, Howard Mortman.

Mortman’s message read:

"In just over 12 hours C-SPAN tweet of @RepAOC floor remarks last nite have become most-viewed twitter video by @cspan of any remarks by a member of House either party, 1.16 million.”

The communications director also revealed that his organization's most viewed Twitter video was that of Sen. Kamala Harris's (D-Calif.) last October. At the time, the senator had questioned then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings.

Harris' clip earned 7.14 million views on Twitter. As part of her speech Ocasio-Cortez stated:

“The truth of this shutdown is that it's actually not about a wall...The truth is, this shutdown is about the erosion of American democracy and the subversion of our most basic governmental norms."

The representative also shared:

"It is not normal to hold 800,000 workers' paychecks hostage. It is not normal to shut down the government when we don't get what we want. And it is certainly not normal to starve the people we serve for a proposal that is wildly unpopular among the American people."
