According to a new investigative series by CNN, at least 13 people who were close to James Brown are demanding an autopsy. Some go as far as asking for a criminal investigation of his death.
Skeptics regarding how Brown died even include Dr. Marvin Crawford. He signed Brown's death certificate at an Atlanta hospital in 2006.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, Crawford revealed that while the death certificate claimed natural causes, he never believed it was correct. He felt that it simply did not add up with how Brown had been during the time
"He changed too fast," Crawford said. "He was a patient I would never have predicted would have coded. ... But he died that night, and I did raise that question: What went wrong in that room?"
The Godfather of Soul died of a heart attack and fluid in the lungs. He was 73-years-old at the time of his death.
He passed away in the early hours of Christmas Day 2006. Twelve years after his death, his manager, widow, son, and several friends and associates revealed in the investigation that there are serious questions about Brown's death. They are calling for forensic investigators to reopen the case.
The three-part series is based on interviews with nearly 140 people. It also examined the 1996 death of Adrienne Brown, James Brown's third wife.
Although authorities in California found no sign of foul play when Adrienne Brown died while recovering from plastic surgery. Her friend was not convinced and believed she was murdered.
In 2017, a retired police detective who worked on Adrienne Brown's case released pages of a notebook that he said a confidential informant had given him in 2001 to CNN. The documents contained an allegation from an informant that a doctor, who denied her claims when questioned by CNN, confessed to murdering Adrienne Brown with a fatal drug overdose.
The police did not open a criminal investigation when James Brown died in 2006. However, many feel this was a mistake.Dr. Crawford says he recommended an autopsy hours after Brown's death but Brown's daughter Yamma Brown declined the autopsy. When CNN questioned her about the decision, she did not offer an explanation.
The CNN investigation began in 2017 when a circus singer named Jacque Hollander tipped off a reporter claiming to have information about Brown's death. She is the same songwriter who alleged that Brown raped her and collected boxes of documents about Brown and his associates.
Last year, Brown's daughter, Yamma Brown narrowly escaped being killed by her ex-husband because of her father's estate. Yamma was forced to cut her ex-husband in defense to avoid being killed after they began fighting over James Brown's fortune.
