Deadline explained that the romantic drama is based on the famous sequence of books written by the former journalist and now-writer, Sherryl Woods.

The show focuses on the lives of Maddie (JoAnna), Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) as they try to strike a balance between family, relationships, and careers in the town of Serenity, SC.

Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson and Woods executively are set to produce this season together. The author recently spoke up about her expectations from season 2 when she told Elle Magazine:

“I think a lot of it is going to be further exploration of what's been started this season. We're going to see where Isaac fits in, in the community. And we're going to see other sides of people's personalities.”

According to Glamour, even though the 40-year-old told her agent to avoid calling her during her break, her agent reached out to her barely three days later.

After hearing her agent claim that “‘they’d love for you to do this show and move to Atlanta in a few days,’” and reading the script, JoAnna’s mind was made up. The first season of “Sweet Magnolias” is available for streaming on Netflix.
