Reddit users shared their differing opinions on a woman’s story of how she was refusing to assist her sick father because he was never part of her life.

According to the woman, her parents divorced when she was six years old. She remained in her mother’s custody for ten years, the woman never saw her father.

There was not a single letter, birthday card, or call from him. She only heard about his movements away from and back to her locality from outsiders. The woman got to know that her father lived only about ten minutes away from her. Despite the proximity between them, she still did not hear from him.

Later, the woman discovered that her father skipped on his child support until her mother dragged him to court. This knowledge only fueled her belief that her father wanted nothing to do with her.

When the woman turned sixteen and got her first car and driver’s license, she was invited to a Christmas party at her grandfather’s home.

Due to not having seen her grandfather or anyone from her father’s side of the family for ten years, she attended the party. It took another four years before she would see her dad again.

She asked Reddit users if it would be wrong for her to do that, adding that she would help out in ways that she can, but would never go out of her way to do so.

This time, they met at another family function. Two years after that, they ended up working together in the same place and ran into each other now and then.

She even started talking to him and sent him greeting cards. However, that was twenty-five years ago. Her father failed to reach out to her in all those years.

Recently, the woman received a call from her stepmother, who told her that her father was sick with cancer. The woman explained that she had reached out to her dad over the ailment.

While speaking to her, her stepmother said that she should step up and help her dad, since she was his only child. The woman managed to hold herself from telling her stepmother she would not offer her father any help.

Some respondents said that the woman would not be wrong to refuse to help her dad. They opined that he was never in her life and that she should care less about him.

Some others said that her father was not asking for help, but that it was her stepmom, who wanted to run away from her responsibility of caring for her husband.

However, a few others urged the woman to care for her father, saying it would be a way for her to forgive him and help him find peace before he dies.
