SUCCESS AND SCANDAL
Williams made history in 1983 by being crowned the first African American Miss America. However, her success did not last her full year of reign. Shortly before the end of her period, a scandal broke out.
Naked photographs of her, which she allowed to be taken as a student, were published without her authorization, horrifying members of the Miss America organization. They soon pressured her to resign.
THE BEST REVENGE: SUCCESS
After the embarrassment caused by this episode, Williams decided not to return to college. On the contrary, she channeled all her energies into putting the event behind her and focusing on her singing and acting career.
Thirty years later, the Miss America organization invited her to return to the pageant, this time as a judge. In an unprecedented moment, the president of the organization offered their apologies for the past incident, recognizing her as the Miss America that she always was.
SINGER AND ACTRESS
As a singer, Williams developed a solid career, with several hit musicals. Some of her productions debuted within the top 10 on the charts and stayed there for weeks. In addition to that, she managed to accumulate more than 10 Grammy nominations during her career.
Parallel to her singing career, Williams developed an acting career. Since school, she had performed very well in the acting field, and in film, theater, and television she has found her place, standing out for her interpretations.
PANDEMIC TIMES
This year, Williams has faced adversity again only to emerge stronger and victorious. After returning from a work trip to London last March, the actress was diagnosed with COVID-19.
After the treatment and quarantine, she explained that she went through difficult times, with stomach discomfort, pain, especially headaches. Fortunately, she managed to recover without any complications.
