23-year-old Japanese professional tennis player Naomi Osaka is well-known not only because of her successful sports career, but also because of her sense of fashion and how she can turn clothes into eloquent statements.

On January 1, 2021, Osaka took to her Instagram profile to look back at her favorite outfits from the year that has just come to an end, not without acknowledging the fact that she spent most of it at home because of COVID-19.

Osaka shared a ten-image slideshow to display her versatile outfits throughout 2020, revisiting training moments at the tennis court as well as stylish outings of a more formal nature. She captioned the post:

“2020 but in outfits, which was kinda hard cause I didn’t go anywhere.”

In no specific order, the throwback images started with a snapshot of Osaka posing as she rests her rear on a vintage car, wearing tight training shorts in black and a bright red sweatshirt.

In the second slide, the athlete wore the same color palette, this time wearing a black sweater over a red ankle-long skirt. The third image showed an elegant Osaka dressed up for a day event, wearing a lace top with a matching long, white skirt.

Conscious and responsible enough to wear a mask when she had the occasion to go out during the pandemic, Osaka never let this affect her style, and she incorporated the garment into her urban clothes.

Osaka has favored a black face mask with a mischievous smile with pointy teeth and evil eyes as her mask of choice, and it looked especially good in a throwback picture of the tennis player out in Brooklyn, wearing a 2pac sweater.

One of Osaka’s boldest style moves during the last year was to dye her curly black hair pink, and she was sure to include a picture of herself posing by a luxurious sports car with pink braids.

2020’S ACHIEVEMENTS

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic slowed her down as it did to most of us, the year was not a complete waste for Osaka’s career. Apart from her September 2020 US Open win, Osaka was recognized as one of AP’s Athletes of the Year.

The accolade shared with basketball star LeBron James, not only celebrates Osaka’s impressive tennis career but also acknowledges her as an outspoken advocate against racial injustice ad police brutality.

Talking to AP after the award was announced, Osaka reflected on how COVID-19 helped her put other people’s suffering in perspective, and this has given her a stronger voice to be “a force for change in our society.”
