BAIL DENIED

After Broderick was apprehended, a judge decided to keep the accused in jail because he had been released on bail for a previous crime. Travis County District Attorney José Garza stated:

“Our office will ensure that Mr. Broderick remains in custody and is held accountable."

Continuing, he sent his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. At this point, it is unclear whether the death penalty may be on the books for these charges.

CAPITAL MURDER CHARGES

After numerous 911 calls, officers managed to arrest the ex-detective on charges of capital murder. This followed nineteen hours of looking for Broderick, who was 20 miles away from the scene when apprehended.

In 2020, he was accused and arrested on charges of sexual assault of a child.

At the time, he and his wife Amanda were claimed by her law firm to be going through a divorce. Their son was found away from the shooting scene uninjured.

UNFULFILLED POTENTIAL

Simmons and Alyssa both attended Elgin High School. The School District Superintendent Dr. Jodi Duron produced a statement about these two students, which read:

"We are heartbroken by the news of this senseless tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families."

The statement commended Alyssa on her excellent academic and athletics skills. It spoke of Simmons as a leader and also complimented him on his sports and scholastic abilities.

A SORDID HISTORY

Broderick has a history of run-ins with the law. In 2020, he was accused and arrested on charges of sexual assault of a child and allegedly strangled a family member in the past.

During the divorce proceedings, Amanda proceeded to request sole custody due to these allegations. She eventually received a protective order for both her and her kids.

The infamous Boulder Supermarket Shooting also saw the lives of many taken by the hand of a gun. Officer Eric Talley, one of the many victims, was part of the Boulder Police Department as an 11-year veteran.

Rikki Olds was just 25 years old when she lost her life in the shooting. She worked as a manager at the grocery store, with her relatives stating that she was full of life.
