Older Twins Meet Weekly despite Living 95 Miles Apart until One of Them Doesn’t Show Up — Story of the Day

Despite living 95 miles apart, two older twins meet weekly at a park, but something unexpected happens one day. One of the twins arrives and waits several hours for her sister, but she doesn't show up. Concerned, the woman decides to travel to her sister's place.

"Where is she? It's already an hour past the meeting time," Ella wondered, looking at her wristwatch as she sat in the park.

Since their children moved out and settled across town with their families, Ella and her twin sister, Emma, 89, would make it a point to meet at the park every Saturday.

"Maybe she's on the bus and can't hear her phone," Ella reasoned after calling Emma for the fourth time.

Ella and Emma lived 95 miles apart with no direct bus connecting their places, and only after multiple transfers could they visit each other's houses, which is why they met at the park. It was located approximately at the center of the route between their houses and saved them the hassle of making transfers, which was a bit difficult considering their ages.

When Emma didn't pick up her call again, Ella left her a text message that she was waiting at the park. She hoped Emma would arrive soon. Little did she know what awaited her that day…

Two hours passed, and Emma didn't show up at the park. Ella got worried and decided to call her again. Just then, her phone pinged with a message:

"Woke up late…Will be there soon."

Ella breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, she made me nervous. I'm relieved she's ok."

Ella loved reading and always carried a book with her. She decided to read it while she waited for Emma, but she couldn't focus. Her eyes were on the book, but her mind and heart were elsewhere. A strange feeling in her heart told her something wasn't right.

Ella eventually put the book down and decided to simply wait. But another hour passed, then another, and then a couple more, but Emma didn't show up. Where was she?

Ella checked her watch once again. Emma should have arrived by then. Worried, Ella called her again. The call went through, but Emma didn't pick up.

The heart can perceive the impending and unexpected.

After five calls and two text messages, Ella's heart was pounding. There was no way Emma wouldn't answer her phone. She always did. She would at least reply to the message!

Worried and terrified, Ella decided to visit her sister's house. She left her another message, saying she was coming over. "...if you haven't left the house, just wait for me," she typed. That message didn't get a reply either.

After traveling for several hours, Ella arrived at Emma's house. Halfway through her journey, her knees were in pain, and it took her another 30 minutes to walk from the bus stop to Emma's house.

As she stood on Emma's front porch, Ella called out to her. "Emma, it's me! Open the door!"

But she didn't receive a reply.

Ella noticed the house lights were on and clothes were drying in the backyard. Emma wouldn't leave the house lights on if she'd left the house. That worried Ella more. It had been several hours since Emma's last text message.

Ella decided to check if the back door was unlocked, and luckily it was. As she entered, she called out to Emma again. "Emma, are you ok? Are you home?"

Suddenly, Ella heard a faint voice. It was Emma's and it seemed to be coming from upstairs. Ella hurried upstairs to her sister's room, but she didn't expect what she saw next.

"Good Lord! Emma!" Ella cried as she hurried to her sister, who was crying in pain on the floor.

"Oh no, what happened? Get up!" Ella began helping Emma up, but Emma could not move her leg.

"It - it hurts, Ella," she cried. "I can't move. I wonder where my phone is…Oh dear, I went upstairs for a shower…I didn't notice the water on the floor after coming out of the bathtub. I don't think I can move, Ella."

"Oh, I'll call the ambulance! Your foot looks swollen. Jesus! I hope it's a sprain and not something serious."

With trembling hands, Ella called 911, and soon after, an ambulance was rushing Emma to the hospital. Unfortunately, Emma had broken her right leg and would require a cast. That meant she would need someone to help her around the house.

"I'll manage, Ella," Emma said. "You're old, and you may also need help. I'm ok," she said and chuckled.

"Oh, why can't you be serious for once? And your son didn't even bother to call you again after you missed his call. I saw your phone!"

"That's how he is, Ella," Emma said sadly. "He or his wife and children haven't visited me in a long time. They are all busy with their lives…"

"Busy, my foot! Someone needs to tell them they're far too ignorant for their own good!"

So Ella called Emma's only son and gave him a nice scolding about how he'd been neglecting his mother.

"Mom broke her leg? How? When?" asked Adam, worried.

"Isn't that too late to ask, young man? She's at a hospital, but she's ok!" said Ella stiffly.

"I'm sorry, Aunt Emma. I've been too caught up with work. I called mom, and when she didn't pick up, I assumed she had gone to see you."

"Dear Adam," Ella said. "We were all your age once, sweetheart. It's not like we were unemployed. Remember that your mother worked three jobs after your father died to raise you. She was always there for you. Jobs and money come and go. If you lose the people you love, you can never get them back. I hope you understand what I'm saying…"

"You're right, Aunt Emma. I'm sorry. I'll fix this. I promise…"

And well, Adam did fix it. He spoke to his cousins, and they decided they would visit their elderly mothers and check on them regularly.

Besides that, Emma and Ella's weekly meetings turned into get-togethers where the whole family would gather, eat good food, laugh, celebrate togetherness, and thank the Lord for keeping their loved ones happy and healthy.

What can we learn from this story?

  • The heart can perceive the impending and unexpected. Ella's heart was telling her something wasn't right when Emma was late for their meeting. Unfortunately, her instincts were correct, and she found Emma crying in pain at home after falling on the floor.
  • Check on your family regularly, especially the elderly. After Emma injured her leg, Ella and Emma's families realized they should check on the older sisters more often. And they started doing so.
