Mike McDaniel's Parents: The Coach Knew He Was Different from His Family

NFL star Mike McDaniel's parents come from different racial backgrounds. It was not until he got older that he noticed how significantly different his skin color was from his father's side of the family. This has also led to several discussions on social media about what he identifies as.

Mike McDaniel's mother, Donna McDaniel, is white, and she was married to his father, a black man. The pair experienced discrimination because of their race. They split when their son, their only child, was young.

Mike McDaniel grew up to be a football coach and currently serves as the Miami Dolphins head coach of the National Football League. He was appointed as the head coach in 2022. He began his NFL coaching career as an intern for the Denver Broncos in 2005. Amid his new appointment in 2022, his ethnicity formed part of a conversation in football.

The NFL labeled him a minority because he is biracial. However, to many people, Mike looks white. Some people have questioned whether he is a "minority," and he has defended himself against such talk. In a February 2022 interview, he was asked about him and expressed:

"It's been very odd, to tell you the truth, this idea of 'identifying as something. I think people identify me as something, but I identity as a human being and my dad is Black."

Mike McDaniel's Parents Were an Interracial Couple & Divorced When He Was Little

Mike once revealed that although he had never encountered racism, his parents had endured it. His mother, Donna, went through it after marrying his father, who also experienced it. The couple divorced when their only child was three, and Donna became a single parent.

As a child, Mike did not have much of a relationship with his dad, and there is contrasting information concerning his father's fate. However, he visited with his paternal great-grandparents, and they had photos of family members all over the house. One day, while walking around and looking at the pictures, he noticed that he was different from other family members. He said:

"I'm the only fair-skinned person in all these picture frames."

Mike McDaniel's Mother Remarried

Mike studied at Yale University, where he graduated with a degree in History. He asked Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan for a recommendation letter. He knew him from his days as a Bronco's ball boy as a youth.

One day, Mike befriended a Broncos video official, whom he introduced to his mother, Donna. He subsequently became his stepfather, and they all moved as a family. Mike revealed the Broncos video official and his mother tied the knot, and they all relocated to Denver.

Following graduation, he was offered a coaching internship, and his journey in football evolved from there. Growing up, Mike struggled to fit in as a biracial and was from a household with little money.

Donna McDaniel Is a Football Mom

Mike's life changed in 2022 when he was named head coach for the Miami Dolphins. It was an emotional moment for him and his mother as he started as an autograph-seeking youngster in Greeley. Mike expressed:

"A complete immersion into emotion. It was hard to think about all the years and all the experiences back to the days when it was her and her alone that knew who I was and was motivating me to be great."

Donna has been by her son's side since he became obsessed with football as a child, from being a high school receiver (similarly to Alan Autry) that later played at Yale, an unpaid NFL coaching intern, and an assistant coach to now being the leader of one of NFL's franchises.

The mother of one resides in The Villages, Florida, and she said she has enjoyed being close to her son Mike, who is only four hours away. "With us both being in Florida now, I can spend good amounts of time with him and his family."

Donna, who wed in her 20s, was only 28 years old when her son was born. She grew up in eastern Colorado as the daughter of a potato and onion farmer.
