Halle Berry is a talented actress known for her roles in films such as "Swordfish" and the James Bond movie, "Die Another Day." The actress has starred in a number of action films, which explains her intense workout regimens. Berry opened up about how she stays fit, admitting that she puts a lot of time into her health.
Although Berry isn't working out until her muscles seize up daily, the actress has shared that she tries to maintain a consistent workout routine, breaking a sweat at least six days a week. Remaining healthy and in shape has become a priority for the "Catwoman" star, and she revealed how she maintains her physical fitness.
Berry has been candid about her health, saying she prefers weight training and plyometric workouts, assisted by her trainer, Peter Lee Thomas. She also enjoys stretching, pilates, or yoga whenever she realizes she's been pushing her body too hard. And Berry has pushed herself to the limits on several occasions.
Instead of taking a much-needed break, Berry continued filming, growing increasingly tired. Alarmingly, the actress collapsed on set, falling unconscious while the cameras were rolling.
The actress revealed that she had to learn Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, Muay Thai, tae kwon do, and kickboxing for her role in the film "Bruised." The intense workout regimen eventually left Berry with two broken ribs. Impressively, this wasn't the first time her dedication to a role has left her injured.
The actress broke three ribs while filming "John Wick 3," and while many would shudder at the thought of breaking even one rib, Berry looked at the injury as a "badge of honor." The actress has also been following a keto diet for the last 30 years, stating that by staying healthy, she hoped to see her kids grow up.
Berry's Impetus to Live a Healthier Life
Berry opened up about her health struggles over the years and explained why a keto diet has been essential in remaining healthy. The 56-year-old actress has candidly spoken out about her battle with diabetes, sharing that she was first diagnosed with the disease when she was 22 years old. At the time, she was working on the show "Living Dolls."
The actress has made working out a part of her daily life and even started bringing her kids into her workouts.
In 1989, Berry spent most of her time working. While working on "Living Dolls," she barely had time to run out and get something to eat. One day, while filming, Berry realized she felt extremely weak but thought she could power through the fatigue and finish filming before grabbing something to eat.
Instead of taking a much-needed break, Berry continued filming, growing increasingly tired. Alarmingly, the actress collapsed on set, falling unconscious while the cameras were rolling. Naturally, she was rushed to the hospital, where tests were done. Luckily, she recovered completely, but the doctors discovered something unexpected.
The medical staff informed Berry that she had developed Type 2 diabetes, which was what had caused her to pass out. Berry recalled that while she was slightly overweight during high school, she thought she had been perfectly healthy. Moreover, the disease didn't run in her family, so the diagnosis came entirely out of the blue.
Nonetheless, she was now living with a chronic disease and had to adapt to ensure she wouldn't suffer another blackout. But Berry was obstinate, thinking she could "tough it out," as she put it. Berry continued to push herself, but her persistence finally took its toll. One day, she passed out and couldn't wake up again.
The actress noted she "didn't wake up for seven days." When she finally came to, the medical staff watching over her explained to her the extent of her condition. While Berry's pancreas was still producing some insulin, it wasn't nearly enough. She would have to take an insulin injection daily and follow a strict diet; otherwise, she could face grave consequences.
How Berry's Kids Help Her Keep Fit
Over the years, Berry has adjusted her daily routines to accommodate her health. Her keto diet has been extremely helpful in limiting weight gain and even stopped her cravings, while her commitment to her workout regimen has kept her fit and healthy. The actress has made working out a part of her daily life and even started bringing her kids into her workouts.
Berry often shares her workouts on her Instagram story, showing off her routine and love for fitness every Friday. In 2020, the actress brought her son, Maceo, into her workout series, using him as a weight, playfully doing reps while the 6-year-old giggled away. Berry revealed it was also a good way to keep Maceo active during the pandemic.
Berry and Maceo did a range of different exercises, from squats to hammer curls. Berry also held her son up while doing a few leg raises and even showed off her strength by holding Maceo up while doing partial deadlifts and hip raises. Berry shares Maceo with her ex, Olivier Martinez, and also has a daughter, Nahla, from another relationship.
Berry has also shared that she looks for different ways to keep her kids healthy. The actress promoted the cookbook "SIMPLE," which has helped her to give her children a healthy diet while keeping things interesting. Berry has also put her children on a keto-based diet similar to her own, noting that the kids love the new meal plan.
Keto requires cutting out all forms of sugar, including carbs. Berry explained that she fills up with loads of meat, preferring chicken or beef. The actress pairs her protein with heaps of vegetables and avoids things like pasta and potatoes. She even exchanged her children's baked potatoes with stuffed zucchini halves, and apparently, the kids adore it.
