A woman turned to social media to find out if she was in the wrong for kicking her husband's family out of their wedding. Social media users weighed in on the strange situation immediately.

A 27-year-old woman turned to Reddit users to ask if she was being unreasonable for kicking most of her husband's family out of her wedding and allowing only her husband's spouses to remain at the ceremony.

The original poster (OP) explained that she and her husband, whom she called "Ben" for his privacy, had married in January. While it was meant to be a happy occasion, it turned into something else entirely.

The OP said that while everyone had agreed on when the couple would get married, the problems arose when they had to contend with Ben's family traditions and come to compromises.

What Happened At The Wedding?

The couple chose their wedding to be on New Year's Day as it was the day they first met, the day they became an official couple, and the day Ben had proposed to the OP, all in different years.

Everyone agreed that New Year's Day was perfect for the couple to tie the knot. However, Ben's family had some long-standing traditions they expected to see on the big day.

To explain how the family behaved, the OP explained that the family was tightly-knit and that she and her husband's siblings' spouses were not allowed to attend family reunions because they were reserved for "immediate family."

She then said that even though she was not allowed to attend significant events like this, she still had a somewhat decent relationship with Ben's family and said that even though they were distant from her, she didn't mind.

The OP admitted: "Before the wedding I've never had an issue with them." However, any relationship the woman had with Ben's family soon ended at her wedding. The OP explained that her husband's family has odd traditions and admitted:

"Over the years, I've put up with them and embraced them."

Ben's family's traditions surrounding weddings were that the cake should be a homemade sheet cake instead of a professional cake, everyone should dress in all white, and all the children in attendance should walk up the aisle and throw flowers instead of having just one.

The OP said she respected their traditions but wanted her wedding to suit her and her husband, so they compromised. They decided the sheet cake was okay, but only if they chose the flavor and design. They also had no children at their wedding, per Ben's request, and nobody was to dress in white.

On the day of the wedding, the bride's family arrived first. They brought no children, and there was nobody dressed in white. Everything seemed to be going well until Ben's family came.

When Ben's family showed up at the wedding, everybody except his siblings' spouses were dressed in white, and they had many children and babies with them. Ben and the OP then kicked them out for going against their wishes, allowing only Ben's siblings' spouses to stay as they had followed the requests.

Ultimately, even the three people who did as they were asked decided to leave with their partners, and Ben and the bride didn't mind. They then canceled their post-wedding celebrations as some of Ben's family tried to sneak in.

What Happened Next?

The OP said that although their wedding went on as usual despite the drama, it felt "ruined." The couple then went on vacation for their honeymoon to celebrate their new marriage and their lives together. However, when they arrived home, things got worse.

The OP shared that as soon as they arrived home, Ben's family contacted them. She shared:

"We were both berated by his family members and basically "shunned" from his family. I feel guilty for not allowing them to practice their traditions."

She then asked Reddit users if she was in the wrong for kicking her husband's family out of her wedding and not allowing them to practice their traditions. Users quickly replied to the OP and gave their opinions.

One user said she was not in the wrong and that she shouldn't allow her in-laws to babysit if they ever had children. Another said it sounded like she had married into a cult. Many sympathized with the woman and ensured she knew she was not out of line.

The OP then said that after reading the comments, she had realized how strange her husband's family was and said she was "blinded by love."

Another woman was also faced with a difficult decision when she had to kick her mother-in-law out of her wedding after she showed up in unsuitable clothing. You can read the full story here.
