However, it is Kevin's divorce from Christine that was contentious. The court proceedings dragged on due to their disagreement over child-support payments.

The exes also appeared in court to come to terms with the timeline of Christine moving out of their family compound in Santa Barbara, California.

Eventually, in September 2023, Kevin and Christine Baumgartner reached an amicable resolution. They mutually agreed on all issues regarding their divorce.

She was at peace even though she was leaving behind her childhood, which she noted had long been abandoned anyway.

She explained, "I reasoned that I could live in a cabin with an abusive father, or I could just live…live in a cabin. I chose the latter." During this time, Jewel received a partial scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan.

Even to this day, her heart cries out with the desire to have a mom in her life. But she acknowledged, "I know that it is not safe with her. Every day I miss having a mom. But I don't miss Nedra. ..."
