On October 16, 2020, James' wife, Kyle Redford, announced on X that her husband had passed away from bile-duct cancer in his liver at their home in Marin County. He was 58. "Jamie died today. We're heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many," she wrote.
