Many people work very hard to maintain good health but are discouraged when it comes to losing weight. Though many expensive products promise instant results, they do not live up to it.

Ginger or Zingiber officinale could help in losing weight and improving health. Just a cup of hot ginger tea can be just the right thing for a bad cold. However, not many are aware of the benefits of drinking ginger water.

A research team from Qaboos University in Oman found that ginger was a strong anti-oxidant substance that prevents generation of free radicals which are implicated in organ damage.

Laboratory studies from the Rappaport Family Institute for Research in the Medical Sciences found that it can significantly reduce ‘bad’ cholesterol.

The vital minerals like magnesium and zinc play an important role in good circulation and blood flow. Ginger also stimulates the production of bile which helps digest fats.

Another benefit of ginger is that it relieves joint pain and osteoarthritis pain due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

It is also effective at reducing nausea related to motion sickness, morning sickness, and nausea from chemotherapy treatment.

Ginger water is extremely easy. One needs about 5 cm (2”) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced very thin. One liter of filtered water and juice from a one-half fresh lemon.

Boil water and add sliced ginger. Simmer it for 15 minutes, then cool the water and strain. Add lemon only if required.

Pour half mixture into a glass to consume in the morning on an empty stomach. The other half can be consumed before dinner. This would stimulate digestion and set one up to burn fat.

Though herbs can be very powerful medicine, one should consult their health care providers or doctors before taking ginger.

People following blood-thinning medications, diabetes medications, high blood pressure medications, should especially consult their doctors.
