Charlize Theron’s role in Tully required her to wake up in the middle of the might to stuff her face with mac and cheese. Her role as an overwhelmed mom required her to weigh a certain weight and so she had to keep eating to achieve this. While it sounds fun, the actress admits it was not as rosy as she gained lots of weight that she had to get rid of once the movie was done filming.

The 42-year-old said she gained 50lbs, most of which came through eating junk food and other unhealthy things. She says that the results were far from fun as her character was affected by the things she fed her body. Her mood, which was constantly bad, affected those close to her.

“You know, it was a huge surprise to me. I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression. Yeah, for the first time in my life I was eating so much processed foods and I drank way too much sugar. I was not that fun to be around on this film.”

What did her diet consist of? She started her mornings with two milkshakes and other fast food items. She admits that the first three weeks were fun, but she soon grew tired of eating unhealthy food for breakfast. She got so disoriented that she had to set an alarm to wake her up at night to eat. “I would literally wake up at two in the morning and I’d have a cup of cold macaroni and cheese just next to me. I would wake up and I would just eat it…I would just, like, shove it in my throat.”

Apart from ruining her mood the weight had her two kids, Jackson, 6, and August, 2, thinking she was pregnant. “My little one was convinced that I had a baby in my belly,” she said.

It’s not the first time the mother of two is gaining weight for a role. She did the same for her 2003 role in Monster that won her an Oscar, but she lost the weight easily as she was pretty young. She says it took more effort this time, but she finally did it.
