Remember singer Maxwell? He almost lost his life and voice but managed to return to stage
Gerald Maxwell Rivera, better known for his stage name, Maxwell, is considered as one of the pioneers of “neo-soul,” a movement that aroused in the late ‘90s as a revival of soul music. Known for his seductive R&B style, Maxwell made fans swoon for years, but in 2012 his career and health were put at risk when he had to undergo a vocal cord surgery.
Celebritist learned from an interview the singer did with the Los Angeles Times, that Maxwell’s career and life were threatened a few years ago when he had to deal with a serious health issue that affects plenty of singers.
The musician of Haitian descent had just announced a six-day tour titled “MaxwellTwoNight -M2N tour 2012” that was going to take him to Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Newark to perform his entire discography when his doctor gave him terrible news.
According to a statement released at the time, his medical team advised him to take vocal rest because of a vocal cord edema and a vocal cord hemorrhage. So, he had to cancel the performances after expressing his regret for not being able to pull through for his fans.
Two years passed before he came back into the spotlight, and when asked about the surgery that he had to get in order to heal his work instrument, he said nonchalantly:
“It wasn't as much of an impact as it was a story itself. Once I was done, I was recording. It was something I kind of had to attend to because I had been slacking off on healing. For me, being healthy and having my voice be on point was worth more than me not meeting a commitment.”
A vocal cord edema affects more singers that you could imagine, and because the swelling of the vocal folds causes the voice to become deep and hoarse, most of them decide to follow the path of surgery in order to recover, even though they have to take a high risk of losing their abilities for good.
Luckily for Maxwell’s fans, the singer came out victorious of his trip to the operation room. And he released his latest album “blackSUMMERS'night” two years ago.
We’re glad to know that Maxwell is still able to enchant an audience with his incredible voice, and we hope to hear new music from him in the near future.
