'Roseanne' scores Emmy nominations despite cancellation
Despite the show’s cancellation the Roseanne revival has managed to get two 2018 Emmy Award nominations. An actress on the comedy series and its editor has been nominated.
CNN revealed that actress Laurie Metcalf had been nominated for her role as Roseanne Cooner’s sister Jackie Harris. In its original run, Roseanne had won three Emmy’s for the same actress.
Laurie Metcalf has been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. While editor Brian Schnuckel picked up one for Best Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series.
That nomination is for his work on the episode ‘Darlene V. David.’ Metcalf isn’t a newcomer when it comes to being nominated for Emmy Awards.

The actress got them for three years in a row, in 1992, 1993, and 1994. Schnuckel also has one previous Emmy nomination from his work on the Here’s to You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years special.
The Roseanne revival was cancelled by ABC after its creator and main star, Roseanne Barr made racial comments against Valerie Jarret, an African-American woman who worked on Barack Obama’s administration.
ABC President Channing Dungey said in a statement following the comment, ‘Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.’
Even though the nominations are a surprise, this isn't Metcalf's first award nomination this year. She has earned many for her role in the film Lady Bird.
In an interview with The Guardian, the actress spoke about all the new opportunities that had presented themselves to her, specifically focusing on Rosanne.
"I didn’t realize how many people were seeing it until months later. I took my kids to the zoo in Chicago, and all of a sudden there were people all around me saying: ‘Are you that Jackie in Roseanne?’ I had seen in the paper that we were in the top five, but this was the real thing happening," she said of the success of the original series.
The revival had a massive audience and consistently dominated TV ratings but, after Barr's comments; ABC felt the need to pull the show. Since then, the network has been working on a spinoff tentatively titled The Conners.
Reports say the new show will focus on the other cast members sans Barr. The 70th Emmy Awards will air live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, September 17, at 5 p.m. PT on NBC.
