A cashier at a grocery store counter was checking out an elderly lady’s groceries, she decided that the elderly woman required a lesson in environmental conservation.

Then, in a rude manner, she started telling the woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because all the plastic would destroy the environment.

The woman replied to the girl in a mild manner and said, “I’m sorry. We didn’t have this ‘green thing’ back in my earlier days.’

She continued telling the young cashier, “See, in my days, we didn’t have all these cans and other plastic products.” She went on explaining that all the bottles of milk, soda, or even beer were returned to the store and from there it went on to the factory for recycling. “But we didn’t have this ‘green thing’ then,” she added one more time.

The young cashier would have thought that was good enough reply for her rudeness, but the elderly lady has some more wisdom with her to grant.

She started explaining how in her days, the grocery stores provided products in brown paper bags which were environment-friendly and could also be reused as book covers.

The elderly lady went on to talk about the elevators and stated that during their days, there was no high energy consuming elevators in every office building and people would gladly take the stairs while visiting anywhere.

“But we didn’t have this ‘green thing’ then,” she added one more time. “So I’m really sorry.”

She then quietly walked out of the store without glancing back even once.
