Ocasio-Cortez would give Trump a close race for the presidency in 2020, new poll says
The numbers are in and they show that the President could have a formidable opponent in the next election.
A poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports showed that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would give Donald Trump a run for his money if she were to go up against him in a 2020 presidential race.
Of course, Ocasio-Cortez would not be able to run till 2028 as she is now 29 years old. Still, the numbers might surprise many.
The poll showed that Trump would receive 43% of the votes from those likely to vote in the U.S. A staggering 40% would give their vote to Ocasio-Cortez.
Undecided voters came in at 17%. There was a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The reports site conducted the poll between January 10 and 13, 2019.
Trump often refers to Rasmussen's Reports to vouch for himself and his approval rating within the nation. Recently, however, even Rasmussen lists his rating as 43 percent, the lowest it's been in nearly a year.
As for whether or not Ocasio-Cortez would actually run for president, the New York Democrat already gave her answer. Even if an exception was made, she wouldn't do it.
Back in December 2018, she tweeted her response to a Vox article that suggested she should be allowed to run in 2020.
Ocasio-Cortez wrote:
"How about... no."
She explained:
"Sometimes political media is too fixated on personalities instead of policies. Can we instead talk about healthcare, a living wage, legalizing cannabis, GND, & other issues?"
One public figure who is focused on Ocasio-Cortez' personality is James Woods. The right-wing actor posted a tweet about Ocasio-Cortez following her first speech on the floor of the House.
In her speech, Ocasio-Cortez spoke about the current government shutdown, which is the longest-running shutdown in U.S. history.
Woods' tweet read:
"This is the most dangerous person in America right now. Ignore her at your peril..."
In his post, Woods accompanied the post with a photo of Ocasio-Cortez wearing a toothy smile. She has yet to respond to the tweet from the Academy Award winner.
Regardless of the criticism, it's clear that the American public has some favor towards Ocasio-Cortez.
