Nancy Pelosi's improbable style: she certainly nails it in her power-suits

Nancy Pelosi’s power-suits have been drawing praise from both political and fashion observers.

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives is always seen in public wearing power-suits that seem to be meticulously chosen for each occasion.

Pelosi, who was first elected to Congress in 1987 as a member of the Democratic Party, is the only woman to have served as Speaker.

“There is something reassuring about Pelosi’s style on the Hill—D.C. is usually a wasteland of sensible flats and quiet suiting that whispers deals, baby, deals. In politics, as in style, she has never been afraid to stand out,” writes Vanity Fair.

The 78-year-old politician caught fashion observers’ attention when she wore a pink suit in Congress early in January this year.

"GOING WITH A BANG"

“It was a deliberate and purposeful fashion choice. This second time, as the most powerful female politician in the United States and the Constitutional equal of the president, she is going with a bang,” writes Everything Zoomer.

“Women of a certain age often feel forced into background, or even invisible. This week, Pelosi reclaimed that space, and then some. She has always been a sleek dresser, though she tended, as was the norm among females breaking into the halls of political power, to wear pantsuits,” the magazine adds.

Pelosi, who was first elected to Congress in 1987 as a member of the Democratic Party, is the only woman to have served as Speaker. She is the highest-ranking elected woman in the United States history. She is now in her 17th term as a congresswoman.

HELPFUL LEGISLATIONS

Pelosi was known for opposing the Iraq war as well as the Bush Administration’s 2005 attempt to privatize Social Security.

Among the important legislations she passed were the Affordable Care Act, the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the 2010 Tax Relief Act.

The congresswoman is married to Paul Frank Pelosi. They tied the knot while she was attending college, on September 7, 1963. They share five children: Nancy Corinne, Christine, Jacqueline, Paul, and Alexandra. The couple now has nine grandchildren.
