Jane Fonda and Roger Vadim's Marriage Was One of the Most Iconic, but Why Did Its Fail?
Jane Fonda and French director Roger Vadim, who got married in August 1965, were among the most notable couples of their time. Here's how their marriage fell apart.
On January 16, 1973, after eight years together, Fonda and Vadim were officially over. In her 2005 autobiography, "My Life So Far", the 81-year-old actress revealed that the director's drinking and gambling was an issue. He wasn't loyal to her as well.
"I had put so much into creating a life with him, fitting into his life, that I had left myself behind."
Vadim, who died on February 11, 2000, was known for his affairs to lovely actresses. Fonda was actually his third spouse.
For quite a while, Fonda still held on to their marriage. On September 28, 1968, the two welcomed their first child, daughter Vanessa Vadim.
However, the award-winning actress eventually decided to divorce Vadim. In her memoir, she wrote:
"I had put so much into creating a life with him, fitting into his life, that I had left myself behind."
On January 19, 1973, three days after obtaining a divorce from Vadim, Fonda married activist Tom Hayden, who died in 2016 at the age of 76.
Their son, Troy O'Donovan Garity, was born on July 7, 1973. The two informally adopted an African-American teenager, Mary Luana Williams, in 1982. Regardless of their upbeat blended family, Fonda and Hayden got divorced on June 10, 1990.
Fonda then started dating Ted Turner, a billionaire TV tycoon and CNN founder. The pair tied the knot on December 21, 1991, but they divorced ten years later. In a candid interview, Fonda opened up about the reasons behind their split. She said:
"He needs someone to be there 100 percent of the time. He thinks that's love. It is not love. It's babysitting. We went in different directions. I grew up."
Since their divorce, Fonda and Turner have remained good friends. The acclaimed actress still refers to him as her “favorite husband.”
From 2009 until 2017, the "Sunday in New York" actress, who underwent successful surgery for a tumor in her breast in 2010, was in a relationship with record producer Richard Perry.
