Mary J. Blige Is Killin' It in Leather Mini-Dress & Boots (Photo)
Mary J Blige slayed in leather when she attended the premiere of a documentary celebrating her friend and fashion guru's story. The rapper proves once again that she's as much a fashion icon as an award-winning entertainer.
Hip-hop and fashion merged last weekend when the Tribeca Film Festival premiered Tribeca Studios’ new documentary “The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion” in New York City. On hand to support one of the film’s subjects, MCM creative partner Misa Hylton was rapper Mary J Blige.
EDGY IN LEATHER
Blige, as one of Hylton’s muses, made sure she slayed in her MCM outfit. She arrived wearing a sultry black leather mini-dress styled like a blazer and furthered her look’s edge with a pair of over-the-knee leather boots. A chunky necklace hung around her neck as she wore several rings to complement her yellow nails.
Peeking out of the singer’s thigh-high boots on one leg was a tattoo of a flower. Her look was enhanced by her long silky blonde hair that fell in waves over her shoulders and the bright red lipstick she opted to wear.
REVOLUTIONIZING HIP HOP FASHION
Blige was there when Hylton began her career as a stylist who revolutionized fashion for hip hop female artists in the 90s. In the documentary that traces the rise of streetwear, Hylton’s contribution to urban fashion is highlighted. She’s known to have changed the way female rappers in the 90s dress. Veering away from masculine baggy ensembles, she developed sexier pieces that encouraged female artists to bare more skin. Also featured in the documentary is another female fashion pioneer, April Walker, as well as male designers Dapper Dan and Kerby Jean-Raymond.
PARTYING 'TIL DAWN
Meanwhile, during the documentary’s premiere, Blige was joined by fellow rapper and Hylton muse Lil Kim who came in a pink and black MCM jumpsuit and black stiletto heels. Kim even surprised the audience and Hylton herself when she performed impromptu during the event. Later that night, Hylton, Blige, and Kim partied at Brooklyn Chop House where they reportedly stayed until 4 am and left a $2,000 tip.
RAP'S FASHION ICONS
Blige and Kim are known fashionistas who would often make waves with their stunning outfits.
Recently, Blige slayed it during the National Action Awards where she accepted an Entertainment Award. She wore a long-sleeved metallic dress with a deep V neckline and paired it with giant earrings that almost graced her shoulders.
Likewise, Kim looked divine in a metallic number when she took the stage at this year’s New York Fashion Week. Wearing a blonde wig for the event’s The Blonds Fashion Show, Kim’s curves and cleavage took center stage as she paraded in a gold jumpsuit cinched tightly at the waist with a black belt. Kim looked almost doll-like during the event which worried her fans who wondered if the rapper went too far with her plastic surgeries. Regardless, her presence that night was powerful.
