Adrienne Houghton Says God & Not Logic Led Her to Husband Israel
Adrienne Houghton says that if she had only followed reason, she would never be happily married today. The talk show host opens up about finding true love in the "wrong" man.
It took a while for Adrienne Bailon Houghton to find the perfect man for her and she now admits, logic had nothing to do with it at all.
STRUGGLING TO FIND THE RIGHT MAN
Adrienne confessed during a sit down with The Shade Room founder Angelica Nwandu and The Same Room host, Stephanie Ike that her husband “was the worst look for me.” That being said, the co-host of “The Real” explained that if she only followed logical reasoning and her own desires, she would have never married Isaac Houghton.
"I was looking for this love and I love really hard and so I expected that in return. And when I wouldn’t receive that love in return it was incredibly hurtful.”
In the past, Adrienne would often find herself disappointed in her quest for love. She recalls,
“For me one of my lowest points was relationship things. Especially in my twenties. Oh my twenties sucked. They were awful. And a lot of it had to do with wanting to be loved. I was looking for this love and I love really hard and so I expected that in return. And when I wouldn’t receive that love in return it was incredibly hurtful.”
“I even went through a period where I would talk to my mom and I would have an angry moment with her. Like, ‘Why did you love me the way I did when I was child ?’"
HAVING DOUBTS
At one point, the singer admits, she almost doubted God’s presence in her life.
“Moments like that can make you feel so low. There’s so many things you think of in that moment that literally make you feel like, ‘God, why do you feel so far from me.’”
She also questioned how her mother raised her believing she was beautiful and worthy of love.
“I even went through a period where I would talk to my mom and I would have an angry moment with her. Like, ‘Why did you love me the way I did when I was child?’ I was told ‘You’re beautiful.’ I was told I was loved everyday and then when I went to seek that in relationships, I wasn’t receiving that. I even had a guy so much as tell me, ‘I don’t tell you you’re pretty because you know you’re pretty.’”
“I went against everything that logically made sense. I’m not an idiot. I’m not stupid. I read everything you read. I genuinely felt led by the Holy Spirit."
FALLING FOR THE "WRONG" MAN
But Adrienne’s views changed drastically after she met Israel who seemed to go against everything she believed was right for her.
“You know how much wrong was wrong with him? Had I gone off of logic, I would never be as happy as I am today,” she said.
“I went against everything that logically made sense. I’m not an idiot. I’m not stupid. I read everything you read. I genuinely felt led by the Holy Spirit. This is the one for you.”
She explains further,
“For people who were perfect, who had no ex-wives, no children, but I would feel repellant toward them. They were on paper and what the public would have thought would have been perfect for me, they were repellant to my spirit.”
“Israel was the worst look I ever could have gone with. I was the worst look for him. He was the worst look for me.”
Adrienne married Israel in 2016, shortly after the gospel musician’s divorce with his first wife was finalized. Rumors spread that Adrienne had been the reason for Israel’s marriage’s demise but the musician admitted his marriage was already in the rocks before meeting her.
FINDING COMFORT IN THE "WORST" FIT
Adrienne admits Israel didn’t come in the package she was expecting.
“Israel was the worst look I ever could have gone with. I was the worst look for him. He was the worst look for me,” she says.
"But in the storm. What looked like circus to everyone else, we were at home like this," she adds and leans back to demonstrate how chilling out with her husband looks like.
TESTING HIS LOYALTY
It took a while for Adrienne to fully trust Israel who once admitted to cheating on his first wife. In fact, the talk show host went to great lengths to prove he was serious with her.
She revealed to her co-hosts in an episode of “The Real” that when she was still dating Israel, she would secretly record him while she was away using a feature on her cellphone. This proved to be a good thing because it turned out, Israel was indeed true to her because she never discovered anything suspicious about him through the recordings. In fact, in one of those episodes she tested him, her recording revealed he was simply writing a worship song.
Adrienne told People after marrying Israel that she felt happiest with him.
“I’ve never felt what I feel right now. I can’t even describe what it is, but it’s such a peace mixed with total excitement.”
HOPING TO START A FAMILY
Today, Adrienne hopes that as much as she’s blessed with a perfect husband, they’d also be blessed with a child. They’ve been trying to have one but it’s been a struggle. Adrienne’s faith keeps her hopes up despite rumors that weigh down on her. People would often suspect her to be pregnant due to her weight and she admits it’s insensitive of them to think that way.
Regardless, Adrienne continues to pray that the right time for her to become a mother will come just like the right husband came to her in God’s perfect time.
