The Many Times 'The Best Man's Mia Calhoun Has Shown She's Best Mom to Her Blind Son
It’s been 20 years since “The Best Man,” but any fan of the classic film will remember Mia, the soft-spoken character played by Monica Calhoun. Today, Calhoun’s full commitment is to her visually-impaired, special needs son who is not so little anymore.
Calhoun shot to fame with her award-winning portrayal in “The Best Man,” but the Philadelphia-born actress has always been protective of her personal life.

Little wonder then that the public was not aware that she welcomed a son, whose name is still not known, in the year 2000. Till this day, the identity of the boy’s father is concealed.
Calhoun and her son made their public debut in 2013 at the premiere of “The Best Man Holiday.” Since then, the actress’s social media has been dedicated to documenting moments with her boy.
MAMA'S LOVE
A look at the “Players Club” star’s Instagram feed shows that mother and son are practically inseparable. From car rides, to morning strolls, and even jam sessions, Calhoun does it all, proving that no caregiver can attend to her son as she would.
Last September, the doting mom had hearts melting on social media after sharing a clip of her giving her son swimming lessons and supporting him as he learned to float on his back.
SOCIAL MEDIA REACTIONS
“Awesome,” gushed one Instagram user. “A mother's love goes a long way. God bless mom and son, amen.”
“You and your son’s beautiful relationship just warms my heart!!” echoed another. “God Bless you both.”
A third fan was full of more prayers:
“May God continue to give you the strength to look after him. You are amazing and this does not go unnoticed before God.”
LIVING WITH A BLIND BROTHER
Besides maternal instincts, Calhoun’s love and dedication to her son are also fueled by her experiences growing up with a younger brother that was born blind.

Speaking of her brother, Eric, during an interview captured by ILOSM, Calhoun revealed:
“My perception on the world and things is just a little bit different. …My compassion and my sensitivity are heightened because of my brother’s blindness…and spending a lot of time with him. And you know, teaching him things that I’ve learned…and then vice versa somewhat.”
MAKING THE MOST OF HER LIFE
“I got a chance to experience life on a different level. Patience in watching these people that volunteer to work with children that have some sort of impairment,” she added. “To teach them how to water ski or whatever the activity was.”
All that experience must have come in handy for Calhoun when she realized her son was blind and needed special care, and the doting mama seems to be doing an excellent job.
In a recent video of the mother-son duo, Calhoun’s “baby” is no longer a little boy. He towers above his mom while wearing a grey sweater, shades, and a Mohawk ponytail cut. Calhoun shared in the caption that they were going on a morning stroll, and both looked like they were having fun.
At the end of the day, there seem to be two indisputable facts about Calhoun: she’s a talented actress, and she’s a fiercely devoted mother.
