Their relationship has certainly surpassed the expected time for most Hollywood relationships. But how did it all start?

First Meeting:

The pair met back in 2007 after they were hired by promoters to host a Super Bowl party. Wade was still married to Siohvaughn Funches and Union's divorce from Chris Howard had just been finalized the year before. Later that year, Wade filed for his divorce from Funches.

According to reports, the pair did not actually talk much at the event and were on opposite sides of the room. Union revealed that at the time she felt like they were opposites because she “likes to party” and Wade didn’t drink at all.

First Public Appearance Together:

In 2010, Wade invited Union to be his guest for his annual philanthropic event, The Summer Groove. They posed together for pictures but did not confirm their relationship status.

Their appearances at the five-day event sparked an outcry from fans. Union was called a homewrecker as Funches and Wade's divorce was finalized just a month before the event.

Funches sues Union:

Since Dwyane and Funches'divorce was extremely messy, it came as no surprise when she took to social media to drag her ex and Union. Funches even appeared on "The Dr. Phil Show" and tried to sue Union for "emotional distress" in May 2010.

The case was later dismissed. In an interview for the Jet cover story in 2012, Union opened up about the experience saying,

"I fought it [the lawsuit]. My life is just too easy to track. So, we were submitting plenty of proof for the times she said I was in Miami. So, it was like, obviously you’re not telling the truth. And then the courts dismissed the case."

Wade was awarded sole custody of his two sons.

Wade had filed for custody of his sons, Zaire and Zion, in 2010. After a long legal battle, he was finally awarded sole custody of both boys. At this time, he also has custody of his nephew.

A Florida judge granted him custody saying, “there is no good cause not to permit the relocate.”

A Break in Their Relationship:

In January 2013 however, it seemed that the couple was headed for an end when Union and Wade temporarily broke up. Union later revealed that "distance" and "scheduling" led to their breakup.

"When you're debating whether to go backward or forward, you have to look at the original issue," she said in Glamour. "[When Dwyane and I broke up briefly in 2013], it was because of distance and scheduling. I finished filming the show, then I flew to Vegas right away to start shooting Think Like a Man Too. I couldn't take time off, and I missed some quality togetherness we desperately needed."

She continued saying, "Over the summer, I reassessed priorities. I'd always wanted an awesome career with back-to-back projects, but I realized I wasn't willing to sacrifice my relationship for it. Moving forward, I decided my work schedule has to make sense for our family."

However, their split did not last long and by April 2013, they were back together again. the couple was spotted together at a Miami Heat event.

Engaged!

When Wade decided to pop the question, he enlisted the help of his boys. Right before Christmas he got down on one knee and asked Union to marry him.

The pair revealed the details of the moment to Oprah in a December 2018 special on OWN with Wade saying,

"I decided that she wasn't just marrying me, she was marrying all of us. So I had them down by the pool, and I had them make their own signs. I had each one say, 'Will you marry us?' I took her outside to look at the water, and at first, she's like, 'What is going on?' I get behind her, and I get on a yoga mat because I couldn't put my knees down. I'm sitting there waiting for her to turn around and she's reading the boys' signs, and the boys said, 'Will you marry us?'"
