Charlize Theron had her fair share of ups and downs, including a traumatizing childhood where her mother was left with no choice but to attack her father.

Although it may have been painful and traumatizing for Charlize Theron, she is not embarrassed to recount the night her mother took on her alcoholic father for self-defense.

The Oscar-winning actress described her father as “a very sick man” from his alcohol addiction, which no one could get him out from.

Theron described her family as unstable for most parts, which was mostly rooted in her father’s being an alcoholic. She recalled:

“My father was so drunk that he shouldn’t have been able to walk when he came into the house with a gun. My mom and I were in my bedroom leaning against the door because he was trying to push through.”

While trying to get inside and shouting that he was going to shoot them both, her father fired at the door three times.

Luckily, none of the bullets hurt them. Because of their situation, Theron’s mother shot back at her father in self-defense.

The actress understood the entire situation and believes that she would have done the same as her mother, had she been in the same situation.

Charles Jacobus Theron was the head of the family who would often abuse his family verbally. His moods would switch from serious to funny from time to time, but his alcoholism remained constant.

The actress' adopted son, Jackson, also recently came out as transgender who chose to be identified as a girl.

Theron’s mother soon had to be put under questioning from the murder, and while she went through the process, she advised her daughter to leave the country and chase after her dreams.

The young performer did as she was told and went to America and became a model, despite her dream of becoming a dancer.
