With a career that spanned decades, veteran singer Anita Baker has already cemented herself as a diva who won’t put up with anything that she doesn’t feel comfortable with.

Former Disney star China McClain, however, has always maintained a playful yet fierce personality both on-screen and off-screen. Hence, it took the internet by surprise when the duo was involved in a dramatic feud on Twitter.

THE CONFLICT

On April 19, 2018, McClain took to Twitter to call out Baker for being rude to her mother. The “House of Payne” star explained that her mother told Baker that she loved her music. Unfortunately, the “Sweet Love” crooner didn’t respond well and allegedly yelled back.

McClain described the experience as disappointing and tagged Baker. As expected, the 62-year-old fiercely responded, telling her side of the story. Alongside a meme of Viola Davis rolling her eyes, Baker explained that she was incognito at the venue, filling out her passport application.

According to the Grammy Award-winning singer, nobody realized who she was until McClain’s mom reportedly yelled her name and brought attention to her. The 22-year-old didn’t buy Baker’s explanation and replied:

“My mother is a pro, Ms. Baker. She knows how to QUIETLY compliment someone, which is what happened (there were only like 8 people there). However...God knows the truth.”

McClain referred to her religious foundation, reminding Baker that the Bible teaches them to respect each other, but the singer failed to do so. However, Baker seemed bent on having the last word writing, “Lordy Gawwwwd” alongside the hashtag hire a publicist.

MCCLAIN’S RISE IN HOLLYWOOD

Before her Disney stardom, McClain had set her eyes on fame as she wanted to be a singer from the young age of 3. Her father was a music producer and her mother, a songwriter.

However, that soon changed at 5 when she landed her first acting role with a minor part in the 2005 movie, “The Gospel” alongside Idris Elba and Boris Kodjoe. Her first major gig came through Tyler Perry, who gave her a part in the sitcom, “House of Payne.”

BAKER’S CAREER

Baker began her singing career in her local church when she was 12. At 16, she was already a part of a local singing group before becoming a part of the soul group Chapter 8.

After the band fell apart in 1979, Baker pursued a solo career and, in 1983, released her debut album, “The Songstress.” It was, however, her second album, “Rapture,” that defined her career with award-winning hits like “Sweet Love,” which earned her her first two Grammy Awards.
