Mariah Carey is a world-famous singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. She has a five-octave vocal range that has stunned fans for decades and has kept her as one of the most influential pop singers throughout all these years.

However, behind her fame and fortune is a troubled family life that spans all the way back to her childhood. In her memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey," the singer remembers growing up neglected.

HER TROUBLESOME CHILDHOOD

Mariah shared she was often ridiculed for her interracial heritage, had to endure witnessing the rage of her brother, and was exposed to drugs and older men because of her sister. She detailed how when she was 12 and Alison was 20, her older sister left her in the company of a boyfriend who tried to take advantage of her.

The "Always Be My Baby" singer also shared the painful moment her sister threw boiling hot tea on her back, which ended up splattered with third-degree burns. It was at that moment she decided to cut ties with her sister for good.

SIBLING VS. SIBLING

In the end, the siblings proved that blood is not thicker than water as Alison sued her sister for 1.2 million dollars for "public humiliation." She claims the book bought about "immense emotional distress caused by defendant's heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable, and unnecessary public humiliation."

The suit added that Mariah dismissed the plaintiff as her "ex" sister and then used the book to humiliate Alison with stories published in the media around the world. It noted that Mariah knew of her sister's condition, yet she continued to publish those stories about her in her book.

HORRIFIC CLAIMS

While the siblings have not gotten along for many years, they both agree on their unhappy home life in their earlier years. In fact, Alison claimed their mother, Patricia, let strangers abuse her at the age of 10.

On top of this accusation, she also claimed her mother made her watch satanic rituals and other sexual activities. She made the claims at a Supreme Court summons in 2016.

A DAUGHTER AGAINST MOTHER

Alison wanted to sue her mother for this, claiming it caused her PTSD, depression, and turn to drugs which ultimately derailed her life. At the time, she sought monetary compensation for the psychological and physical damage done to her.

After finding success, Mariah revealed both her siblings had sold lies to gossip magazines that would listen. Unfortunately for the singer, the attacks did not stop when she left their home decades ago, but it continues through the lies spread by her siblings through the years.

HER DESPERATE PLEA

In more recent years, Alison and their brother Morgan surfaced in the media, seeking help from the singer. Alison was caught on video making a plea to Mariah to help save her life. She said:

"Mariah I love you, and I desperately need your help, please don't abandon me like this."

In the video, she was suffering from HIV, something she's been living with for years. Morgan recorded the video in hopes of striking a chord with Mariah to help their sister with the bills.

Following Alison's hospitalization, Morgan, who was residing in Italy, spoke to Daily Mail Online about how Mariah did not help their sister. He blames this lack of help as to why their sister is unable to take her medication regularly.

DEBUNKING THE CLAIMS

Unfortunately, Alison's brain scans showed severe brain damage, which is why she had memory loss, seizures, and occasional experiences of loss of consciousness. Morgan acts as his sister's medical proxy.

While Mariah did not address the video or the situation directly, representatives for the singer denied the claim that she had not helped her sister. Their statement revealed she'd spent hundreds of thousands supporting Alison and her children as well.

ALISON'S ARREST

Alison is a mom to four children. Unfortunately, she and her kids share a complicated relationship due to her drug addiction and her past that included prostitution.

Previously, Alison revealed she worked as a prostitute in New York before Mariah found fame. However, in more recent years, Alison was arrested on prostitution charges in upstate New York.

Then 55, she was arrested in Saugerties following an investigation at a hotel. It was revealed she solicited money in exchange for sex from an undercover police officer. At the time, police described her as transient, saying she advertised her services online.

A CHALLENGING YEAR

2016 was a challenging year for the Careys, as all of this happened in the span of a couple of months. Mariah's ex-husband, Nick Cannon, once spoke out about Mariah's siblings, saying he was there as her support system during their marriage.

What this meant was that if Mariah wasn't talking to her sister, then he wasn't either. At the end of the day, he was on her side.

HER OWN MENTAL ILLNESS

Despite her staggering net worth, Mariah hasn't had it easy. In 2001, she was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder after being hospitalized for a physical and mental breakdown.

She sought treatment for it years later, as she chose to live in denial and isolation. The singer was in fear that someone would expose her mental illness. However, when it was too heavy for her to carry alone, she finally decided to seek help.

Mariah undergoes therapy and takes medication for bipolar II disorder. This mental illness involves periods of depression and hypomania, which causes irritability, sleeplessness, and hyperactivity.

She believes in striking a balance among all things, especially when it comes to balancing her emotions, work, and her family life.

Mariah is one of the most successful singers of all time, topping the Billboard charts 18 times. She is also a doting mother to Moroccan and Monroe Cannon, and a loving girlfriend to Bryan Tanaka.
