The woman shared that she raised her teenage son alone while his father sent money for child support. She also shared that she was earning a good amount through her job.

The woman shared that she was working in the tech sector, earning a handsome salary, while her son's father was also extremely wealthy. He paid child support which was enough for their son to live a luxurious life. She explained:
"He goes to a fairly competitive private school, is in a lot of extracurriculars that cost a decent bit"
One day, she received a call from the school administration informing her about her son's unacceptable behavior. They told her that he had been bullying other students.

He believed they were "poor" because their parents dropped them off in older cars, and they wore clothes that were not as expensive as his.
Her son was not happy to pretend he was "poor."
OP (Original Poster) confessed she was "appalled" by his behavior because she had never expected her son to judge others based on their wealth. She immediately thought of teaching him a lesson.

She talked to her son, telling him how his behavior was wrong. She told him he shouldn't feel proud of the things he had because he didn't earn them. She explained:
"By totally random chance he happened to be born into good circumstances."
Her main aim was to let her son know that bullying was incorrect. She talked to the school admin and arranged a meeting with the students her son bullied to apologize to them.

She decided that she would take her son to a thrift store to shop for clothes that year to teach him a lesson. Since he was also bullying his classmates for coming to school in an older car, she drove him to school in an old jeep. She wrote:
"I'm driving him everywhere in my '92 jeep that was one of my first cars that i mostly keep around for nostalgia and off roading."
OP also made her son borrow equipment from the school club instead of buying those things for him. On the other hand, her son was not happy to pretend he was "poor."

He complained that being dropped off in a jeep was tarnishing his image at school. His friends' parents also didn't want their kids to sit in that jeep because it was old and had no doors.
OP's husband also got upset with her for driving his son around in an old car. He learned about it through his friends, whose children attended the same school.
When she informed her husband it was a punishment, he told her that it wasn't fair. He believed the penalty was affecting his son's image at school, and it might leave a lasting impact on his life.

However, OP believed she was doing the right thing and that this was the only way she could teach her son a lesson. She wrote a Reddit post to ask other users if her approach to parenting was right.
fuktequila replied to OP's post, assuring her she made no mistake. He believed she was right because she aimed to teach her son a lesson for the rest of his life. He explained:
"It’s never okay to make fun of someone based on their families level of income."

Meanwhile, another Redditor suggested for OP make her son get a job. They believed earning money would make him stop taking his luxurious life for granted.
Another Redditor named compulov added that OP could make him buy the sports gear with his own money, writing:
"Since it sounds like OP had to work their way up in the world to get to where they got, it wouldn't be a bad idea for the kid to learn how to do the same."
Most people agreed OP did the right thing by punishing her son. Some of them shared similar experiences and suggested that OP get her son a job.

Questions to Ponder:
Do you think OP should have entertained her son's father's objections?
Her son's father was absent from their lives most of the time, and he only contacted her after learning she was driving him in the old jeep. Some people might agree OP could have told him not to complain since he was never there with them. However, it's also true that he was paying child support, so he had the right to speak up for his son. What do you think?
Do you think OP should make her son work?
Many Redditors suggested that OP make her son work at either a fast-food restaurant or a store. They thought it would help him understand how it feels to earn money. Do you think making him work would help? Or do you think it would make the child more rebellious?
