Every hideous mistake is one more nail to the coffin & one man realized this after he secretly sold his inheritance for millions & kept the money to himself without his twin sister's knowledge.

Redditor acollectionofcells3 took an interesting plight to Reddit's "AITA" sub to ask strangers on the internet if she was wrong for suing her twin brother over a piece of legacy that wasn't meant to be sold.

But before getting deeper into the ordeal, she gave the online world insight into what led her to take this colossal step against her brother. Was only money involved? Or was either of them getting a bigger share of the family fortune? Well, neither…it was just that he broke her trust in the most unexpected way.

The Original Poster (OP) and her twin brother, 32, were born to wealthy parents who were thoughtful to leave enough assets for their children to kickstart their lives.

After their passing, the siblings ended up splitting their inheritance equally and began focusing more on their lives, marriage, and family. However, life wasn't all sunshine and rainbows for OP's brother who dreamed big.

He assumed starting his own business was the only key to unlocking his success and approached his sister for help, considering both she and her husband were affluent. But this is where OP's decision cemented the groundwork for a massive rift in the family after she agreed to help him without interpreting his intentions.

OP and her spouse signed a contract stipulating her brother's inherited property as collateral. The couple was assured their money was to be in safe hands, considering OP was her brother, and they had a lien drafted on the pawned property worth millions through the lawyer.

She claimed that her family would've still guilt-tripped her if she hadn't helped her brother financially.

OP hoped her brother would redeem his business and clear the debt quickly. To her dismay, that was far from reality. Nearly two years later, her biggest nightmare arrived when she found out her brother had secretly sold the pledged house to one of their cousins and kept the money to himself.

OP was furious and threatened to take legal action against him. OP learned that although her brother had been diligent in his monthly payments, he had no choice but to sell the house to save his dooming business and was compelled to do it without her consent.

Their confrontation eventually resulted in a massive uproar in the family. She dealt with divided opinions, especially from her brother's wife and mother-in-law. They deemed OP heartless for filing a lawsuit against her brother despite getting an equal inheritance as him.

The woman was baffled by her brother's decision to sell the property, although it was specified as collateral in the contract. She then asked random strangers on Reddit if considering suing her brother was right, and unsurprisingly, people had a lot to say.

"He can't secure a loan with an asset, profit off of the asset's sale without repaying you, and then expect you to sit tight while his clearly failing business loses more money," Redditor Barrel-Of-Tigers affirmed.

"What everyone else thinks doesn't matter. Loans are exactly that he wanted a financial contract with you, not a bank," user atex1433 wrote, adding:

"So, you are in a sense the bank, and he sold his collateral and didn't fulfill his obligation to you...The only way you would be an [expletive] in this situation is if you don't sue your brother."

Her brother's wife and his mother-in-law constantly pleaded with her to forgive him as he was unaware that he wasn't legally allowed to sell the house. But OP was unmoved and hell-bent on proceeding further legally.

She also claimed that her family would've still guilt-tripped her if she hadn't helped her brother financially.

"[I]f I didn't give him the loan, I'd still end up with a lot of family hating me. He's still making monthly repayments; I just didn't know he sold the house," she expressed. "Now he's saying that he'll sell off his stocks and bonds to pay off the loan," OP added, although she was sure he wouldn't repay even half the amount as the stock market had crashed.

Questions to Ponder:

Do you think OP should've rechecked the lien she'd drafted to ensure her brother could never sell the property?

In one of her responses to a person's question, OP said she had a lien drafted through her lawyer and was also confident her brother would never try to sell the property. However, she was confused about how the sale went through, considering the alleged house was stipulated as collateral legally.

Did OP's brother genuinely not know he could not sell the pawned house?

OP's brother's wife and mother-in-law constantly contacted her to forgive him and not file a lawsuit, citing that he didn't know he couldn't sell the collateral property. However, people online told OP that her brother could've known better and pawned a different property, not necessarily the one he sold. However, it's still guesswork as OP is yet to update whether she checked her brother's other available properties from their inheritance. How would you react to the situation if you were OP?
