Gloria Estefan’s Daughter Emily Was Hurt by Her Mother’s Reaction to Her Sexuality: Inside Her Coming-Out Story

Gloria Estefan, a Cuban-American actress who rose to prominence as the lead singer of Miami Sound Machine, is poised to star in the remake of the 1991 classic "Father of the Bride."

Gloria Estefan will be featured in the upcoming HBO romantic-comedy film "Father of the Bride," a comic version of the 1991 classic. She will co-star with her daughter, Emily Estefan, and actor Andy Garcia, who will play Billy.

Emily will play Ingrid, the younger version of Gloria's character. The 64-year-old legendary singer has been supportive of her children and their relationships. But it wasn't always like this, especially about Emily's sexuality.

In October 2020 "Red Table Talk: The Estefans" Facebook Watch series, Gloria and Emily opened up about when the mother-daughter pair had an honest conversation about sexuality.

Like any other mother and daughter, the movie star and Emily have a complicated connection. Emily admitted that she was hurt by her mother's unexpected reaction when she revealed her sexual identity.

According to Emily, Gloria reacted differently when she revealed to her mother that she was queer and in love with a woman. Emily recalled the duo's unforgettable conversation and said:

"I was like, 'Hey, I'm in love with this girl.' The first thing you said was, 'If you tell your grandma and she dies, her blood is on your hands.'"

Gloria's harsh statement caught Emily off-guard. While Emily understood that her late grandmother was too old to grasp her sexual identity, she was upset that her mother seemed to imply to her that she should "hide" her true self.

Emily has been in a relationship with her girlfriend, Gemeny Hernandez, for six years.

Gloria stated that her daughter remembered the exchange differently. The legendary singer said she was trying to protect her ailing mother and that it could affect the grandmother-granddaughter relationship.

To avoid a crack in Emily and her grandmother's bond, Gloria advised her daughter to introduce her partner to her grandmother without disclosing the nature of their relationship.

Despite the initial misunderstanding, Gloria has accepted Emily's identity. Gloria then assured the young musician that she loved her unconditionally.

Emily has been in a relationship with her girlfriend, Gemeny Hernandez, for six years. Gemeny is a podcaster, according to her Instagram account. She received her bachelor's degree from Florida International University in Miami.

The lovely couple doesn't hold back when it comes to declaring their love for one other on social media. In one of Emily's sweet Instagram tributes, she described her girlfriend as a "beautiful Moon Flower."

Likewise, Gemeny gushed over a photo of Emily gazing at her blurry presence. "Find you someone who looks at you the way @emily_estefan looks at me!!!!" she captioned.

Emily is the youngest daughter of Gloria and her husband, 19-time Grammy winner Emilio Estefan. Aside from Emily, the power couple has a 41-year-old son named Nayib.

Gloria and Emilio are two well-known couples with children who identify as LGBTQIA+. Like them, NBA star Dwyane Wade is a proud parent of Zaya, who came out as transgender in 2020.
