What should have been an amazing time for a college student who was invited to her friend's family vacation turned out to be the opposite. The friend's rich family kicked her out, but what happened next would leave them even angrier.

Once in a while, everyone needs time away from their busy schedules, hence, the need for a vacation. It affords individuals enough alone time to recharge and restore their bodies, while family members have enough time to bond without distractions.

Sometimes, individuals and families love to go on vacation alone; other times, they don't mind bringing someone along. Sadly, while a vacation is majorly meant to be filled with happy memories, things can go wrong. For example, people could die, or conflicts could erupt.

The latter was the case of a Reddit user who shared her story on a popular subreddit, where people find out if they are wrong after having a nonviolent conflict. Here are the details of the Original Poster's story.

DETAILS OF WHAT WENT DOWN BEFORE THE VACATION

OP is a college student. According to her, Meg, her roommate from 2021, who is from a wealthy family, invited her for a family vacation. Meg had told OP that she was allowed to bring a friend. However, the latter thought it was quite awkward.

According to OP, she was not Meg's first choice, but she was chosen because the rich girl's parents had rejected their daughter's first choice, who was a guy, and the second choice, a girlfriend they did not like. However, despite being the third choice, OP accepted the invitation.

Meg's parents paid for OP's plane ticket and booked a resort, for which she was grateful. The original poster decided that she would treat her friend's family to dinner to show appreciation and save money for food to prevent being more of a burden to the family.

So, after gathering enough money, it was finally time for the vacation. Unfortunately, the trip was far from what OP had expected. She explained that Meg, her parents, her father's friends, and her three brothers got first class.

However, OP was given an economy seat. Still, she did not complain because it was pointless to argue about a plane ticket she did not pay for.

INSIDE OP'S UNPLEASANT VACATION

They finally arrived at the resort, but things would only get worse. OP found out that the family wanted her and Meg to cook in the resort kitchen throughout the vacation.

It was unpleasant to OP because she was not pre-informed and would not be receiving help from the men due to Meg's family's firm belief that cooking was a woman's job. To make matters worse, Meg's mother could not help as she had recently undergone hand surgery.

OP was upset because she did not know how to cook well but had to cook every meal for six men and Meg's mom. However, she had no option but to oblige. While cooking, OP showed her lack of culinary skills by messing a meal up.

She made undercooked chicken and overcooked steak, making Meg's dad angry. He criticized the food and eventually got OP pissed. OP confessed:

"I got short with him and told him that if he knew how to do better, he could pitch in instead of standing around criticizing."

Unfortunately, Meg's father got angrier, and the situation escalated. The man reminded OP that it was his vacation. OP retorted by telling him she was also trying to have a vacation, further asking if she had been invited as an unpaid domestic servant.

OP's reply infuriated the entire family, and they began yelling at her. At some point, she sarcastically called herself "the help," and that comment was the straw that broke the camel's back. Fuming in rage, Meg's father asked OP to leave the suite and return home. But he made no mention of how she would do that.

WHAT HAPPENED AFTERWARD?

So, OP left and called the airline, asking for a way she could prevent anyone from canceling her return flight ticket. Luckily for her, there was. The airline helped OP to set a passcode, and changes to the ticket could not be made without it.

Afterward, she proceeded to the resort desk to ask about affordable available rooms, noting that she was stranded unexpectedly. Thankfully, there were options for OP, which she took.

OP continued her vacation for the next three days on the beach, sightseeing. Unfortunately, she would run into Meg's parents, who were taking a sunset walk.

According to OP, they were very upset that she stayed, was using the return flight, and deceived them into thinking she could not afford a vacation, whereas she could.

NETIZENS' THOUGHTS

OP shared her story, hoping she could get netizens' reactions and determine if her actions were wrong. Since she shared the story, it has garnered over two thousand comments.

Redditor Saebelzahntiger wrote, "This is no way to treat the friend of your child? Also, it is no way to treat your child [expletive], your poor friend." Redditor Murky_Translator2295 also noted:

"I feel really bad for poor Meg. She's still left cooking for all those people, but now she has to do it alone. She really should have warned OP that they'd be put in this situation, though."

OP agreed with the previous Redditor, noting that Meg would have informed her since she knew her family saw cooking as a woman's job.

Redditor Bruiscear also noted that Meg was not honest with OP initially. According to the user, the original poster was right to protect the ticket and organize rooms. While a majority are in support of OP's actions, she believes her actions might be wrong. In OP's words:

"I might be the [expletive] because I got kicked out of my roommate's family vacation and still planned to stay at the resort for the week."

OP further noted that Meg's parents did not want her around, but she decided to stay at the resort and use the flight home.

Questions to Ponder

  • Was it the right decision to stay on that vacation and use the flight home?

Netizens applauded OP for her actions, noting that it was only fair she stayed and used the flight home, seeing the circumstances to which Meg's parents subjected her. On the other hand, OP maintained that her actions might have been wrong as her friend's parents did not want her around.

  • What do you think about Meg?

Reddit users condemned Meg for letting OP go on vacation without informing her about her family traditions. According to the users, it would have been easier if OP had prepared herself for the task ahead. On the other hand, other users felt pity for Meg, as she was left alone to cook for over six people.

  • Should Meg and her friend still continue their friendship?

From the story, OP only had the altercation with Meg's family. Although the conflict could have been prevented if Meg had opened up before the trip, Redditors believed that Meg and OP could eventually sort out their differences. However, others maintained that Meg's actions were terrible and urged OP to rethink her connection with Meg and her family.
