It is not often you meet people who would blindly trust their expensive car with a total stranger. With car thefts on the surge, it is always wise not to leave your car around strangers.

However, there are a few exceptions, like Scott Davis, 33, who didn't think twice when an unknown woman approached him for his car keys, citing an "emergency."

The Charleston-based family man didn't see what was coming ahead of his heedless decision. Instead of questioning the woman further, he gave her the keys to his expensive Toyota Camry. But it turned out to be an unforgettable nightmare when her husband knocked on his door the next day with some startling news...

Scott and his wife Rebecca were shopping with their kids in the local supermarket on a busy Saturday evening. Since it was their day off, they decided to stock their pantry with groceries for the entire week.

"And how do you know my wife? Wait a minute...what's going on?" Scott gasped in shock.

"Hey, honey, careful with the bags," Scott said as he followed his wife to their car. They carried big shopper bags while their kids, Dave and Maria, hopped behind with their lollipops.

"I think we will run out of fuel," Scott said. "We will fill it up on the way, okay? And if you want to visit the parlor meanwhile, I can wait."

Just as he was about to unlock his car, an unknown young woman in a red hoodie came running to him, crying for help.

"Please help me!" the woman sobbed. "Please give me your car keys. There's an emergency!"

Scott and Rebecca were puzzled. They looked at each other in disbelief and wondered what the woman was talking about.

"Wa-wait...Do I know you?" Scott asked the lady. "I'm sorry, but I don't think I can give you my car."

"No, please," the woman begged. "My name is Amanda, and I need a car urgently to drive my son to the hospital."

Scott was shocked. "To the hospital?" he asked. "What happened to your son?"

"He's right there," Amanda said, pointing to a faint corner in the parking lot. Scott and Rebecca followed her and what they saw there sent shivers down their spine.

"Oh my God...Here, take my car keys. And give me your phone number. I'll message you my address," Scott said, handing the keys to his expensive car to the woman. He grew restless after seeing Amanda's little son lying on the ground. It seemed he had tripped and hurt his head, which was bleeding.

Meanwhile, Rebecca was suspicious. "Honey, I don't think it's a good idea to just trust a stranger," she said. "The last time you did the same thing, it took us a week to find our old car that was stolen by the person who begged you for a lift. This car is new, and I don't want you to take that risk again."

"Chill, honey," Scott said. "I'm just trying to help. She doesn't look like a robber to me. She just gave me her number." He handed over the keys to the woman, assuming he had done the right thing by trusting his instincts.

"Thanks, I'll never forget your help," Amanda said, and she put her injured son Tom and two daughters in the backseat. "Thank you so much," she said, smiling, then she drove past the supermarket gate.

"What do we do now?" Rebecca asked her husband, worried. "I hope she returns our car. Or else, you're going to learn a very important lesson the hard way."

Scott was suddenly worried too. Something didn't seem right to him, especially when he saw Amanda smiling as she was leaving when she was supposed to be anxious about her injured son. He hoped his wife wasn't right.

He returned to where Tom lay and leaned a bit to check. That's when he realized the crimson liquid he thought came from Tom's head was not blood at all. It was an odorless red liquid dye.

"Oh jeez...I should have listened to you...I think we've been robbed," he said and called 911.

"Robbed?" Rebecca repeated. "Oh no, then our car? I told you, and it's all your fault!"

When the cops arrived, they began investigating, and what unfolded next led to a sleepless night for Scott.

"Yes, officer, that's right," Scott said. "She said her name was Amanda, and her child was injured. Here, this is where we saw them."

The officers examined the crimson stains. "Well, it looks like a well-planned theft. Let's check the CCTV footage," said the officer.

But to their dismay, the camera in that part of the parking lot was under repair. Scott lost his only chance of tracking down Amanda's identity. He took a cab home with his family after the officers assured him they would soon find his car.

A disappointed Scott tried tracking his car with its locator feature but was unsuccessful. He couldn't think of anything other than waiting to hear back from the cops.

"Damn! Her number is switched off!" he shouted. He was anxious the whole evening, often checking outside to see if the cops would arrive with some update.

The evening unfolded into the worst nightmare for Scott as he couldn't stop thinking about his stolen car. "I knew she looked suspicious," Rebecca said. "I told you several times not to trust strangers, and you never listen to me."

"Honey, please, can you stop?" Scott begged. "I'm already upset, and right now, I can only think of how to get back our car. Please stop annoying me!"

Scott spent the night restless and fell asleep in disappointment. A vehicle honked outside his house the following day, and it sounded all too familiar.

"Honey, wake up!" Rebecca shouted. "Scott, wake up! I think someone is outside." Anxious, the couple walked over to their main door. Scott got the shock of his life after opening it.

"Oh my God! Our car!" he exclaimed in surprise. "And who are you?" he said to the man who got down from the driver's seat. Scott gasped in shock as Amanda, and her three kids emerged from the car too.

"You???" Scott shouted at her. "How dare you steal my car? I trusted you! Wait until I report you to the cops —"

The man with Amanda interrupted Scott. "Mr. Davis. Please calm down. I'm Ralph Moore, and this is my wife, Amanda," the man said. "Hey, Mrs. Davis! How are you?"

"Your wife???" Scott gasped in shock. "And how do you know my wife? Wait a minute...what's going on?"

"Can we please go in and talk for a minute? I'll explain everything."

Hesitant and confused about what was happening, Scott invited the strangers into his house.

"Your wife staged your son's injury and took my car away last night," Scott complained. "We already reported it to the police, but I don't understand what's going on now."

"Yes, Mr. Davis. I got the complaint," Ralph said.

"You got the complaint? What do you mean?" Scott asked. And that's when another truth unfolded.

"I'm from the department. Amanda and your wife are friends. We were actually shooting a short film to spread awareness on why people should not trust strangers with their cars or anything for that matter," Ralph said. "You must be aware of the surging car thefts in our place. We had decided to film a staged theft and make it as authentic as possible to spread the message!"

It turned out that Ralph and his team were at the parking lot, filming Scott's reaction to the theft. Rebecca was aware of it and had teamed up with the cops to help in the cause. She also wanted to teach Scott an important lesson on why he shouldn't trust strangers again.

"Our main message was not to trust strangers and the importance of calling 911 during an emergency. You did exactly what we had in mind!" the officer added. "Scammers can easily approach innocent people in disguise, and we wanted people to be aware of that."

"Jeez, officer! I almost lost it thinking my car was stolen!" Scott exclaimed in relief.

"Well, Mr. Davis. I appreciate your genuine participation. We would've returned your car yesterday, but it broke down. We had to fix it, and it took a whole night at the garage. We've also refueled it as a token of our gratitude," the officer said.

The short film soon made rounds on the department's social media page. Scott and his family were mentioned as "actors" in the disclaimer. Scott became quite famous for his genuine reactions when the stranger approached him for help.

From that day onward, Scott and the people who watched the short film were aware of the importance of not blindly trusting strangers. Ultimately, he and officer Ralph became good friends, and they often discussed new tactics to spread awareness to people!

What can we learn from this story?

  • Help others but ensure they are trustworthy and genuine. When Amanda approached Scott asking for help to save her injured son, he blindly gave her his car keys without verifying her claims.
  • Do not trust anyone blindly without verifying their identity. The main purpose of Amanda approaching Scott for his car keys was to film his reactions secretly and spread awareness on why people should not blindly trust strangers.
