Since the Queen passed away on September 8 at her Balmoral retreat home in Scotland, her family kept busy participating in processions, greeting and speaking with mourners, welcoming global leaders and dignitaries, and holding vigils at the Westminster Abbey before her September 19 funeral.

In the wake of the monarch's death, numerous changes had to be made at the palace. First, Prince Charles' title changed to King as he took over the throne, as did the Cambridges titles.

Prince Willam and Kate Middleton, who previously went by Duke and Duchess of Cambridge now go by the Prince and Princess of Wales, while their children, Princes George, and Louis, and Princess Charlotte, are now using their new last name, Wales.

They received their new titles from King Charles a day after the Queen died, placing William, now Duke of Cornwall, the next in line to the throne, and George, Charlotte, and Louis the second, third and fourth, respectively.

Three days after the Queen's funeral, William and Kate stepped out publicly for the first time since the Queen's death. The two met with volunteers and operational staff and greeted mourners and supporters who had gathered to pay their respects to their Queen.

Kate looked stunning in a Dolce & Gabbana collarless double-breasted long coat with gold buttons, paired with black signature suede pumps and pearl-and-diamond earrings. Meanwhile, William went for a simple look, donning a navy blue suit, a white dress shirt, and a black tie.

Kate’s Red Coat Was a Nod to Diana

As they spoke to the volunteers and operational staff that helped make the Queen's funeral a success, William opened up about a touching incident that happened shortly after the Queen passed on. He explained that he had seen five rainbows over Balmoral, with Kate adding:

"Her Majesty was looking down on us."

Hello Magazine reports that people spotted rainbows on the same day over Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, and another over Westminster Hall as the Queen's body lay in state.

As the new Prince and Princess of Wales, William, and Kate, made their first visit to Wales since they became Prince and Princess. They had promised to visit at the earliest opportunity following the Queen's death, a trip aimed at "deepening the trust and respect" they had with the people of Wales.

During their visit, Kate paid respect to Diana by opting to wear a red L. K. Bennet's "Spencer" coat. She not only made reference to her mother-in-law, Princes Diana's maiden name, Spencer but also mirrored Diana's own first official visit to Wales as a princess when she wore a red coat.

Shortly after photos of Kate and William in Wales surfaced, there was a divide on her choice of clothing. Some fans praised her, while many others criticized her.

Some fans thought it was too early for her to wear bright clothing weeks after the Queen's demise and only days after her burial. One royal fan @tennysonsarah1 wrote:

"Queen has been buried barely a week. We understand [the] official mourning period's over, but Kate Middleton wearing a bright red coat and grinning?"

The fan felt that Kate should not be in bright colors so soon after the funeral as it showed she had no decorum or class. Another fan wasn't too impressed with Kate's style and thought she was copying Meghan's. She wrote:

"Meghan was the first one wearing that style and Kate just copied that! Never forget."

However, many others thought she looked stunning and praised her for being bold enough to pull off such a bright color. One fan @Margare89102012 said she thought the Queen would be proud of Kate for wearing such bright colors and for smiling with the people:

"Just as she did throughout her 70-year reign."

Another fan thought it really did not matter what she wore as long as she looked beautiful, while another shared that Kate still was in mourning as she had all black underneath the coat. The fan, @CastanzaGeorgie added:

"Red has always been historically linked to the monarchy. This is a show of respect."

"[William] sure did nail down a winner. Kate is all class." Another fan commented, while another, @housemartinlifestyle wrote:

"Day one after the mourning period's end -- landing with your boots on the ground (and with a coat the color of a Welsh Dragon, too) You're doing your grandmother proud!"

Others thought Kate was the epitome of class and elegance based on her choice of attire and complimented the couple, writing: "You are a beautiful couple. Class, style, elegance, and respect." @blooms.and.bakes thought William'smother would be super proud of her daughter-in-law, and commented:

"Diana would be so proud."

Their New Titles Carry a Lot of Emotional Weight

Now that William and Katie have officially taken over the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, they understand just how much emotional weight their new roles carry.

Since Diana's death 25 years ago, there has not been a Princess of Wales — Camilla technically became the Princess of Wales after she married then-prince Charles, but she chose to go with the title of Duchess of Cornwall instead. And so, Kate stepping into the role carries a lot of weight.

Royal expert Gareth Russell says that Kate understands that Diana had a lot of impact on the world and was at one point the most famous person worldwide, and for that, she has big shoes to fill. He, however, feels that Kate and William will honor Diana's legacy with "real respect."

People are moved b the fact that William's mother was the last person to carry the title, and now, it is Kate, his wife. Russell says it puts pressure on William and Kate "because it brings a lot of the…emotional collateral charisma that Princess Diana had…and invests that title with a certain emotional appeal to people.”
