Princess of Wales Arrives at Wimbledon in a Blue Gabriela Hearst Suit — but It's What She Did Before Entering the Club That Has People Talking — Photos

The royal skipped the usual straight walk into the clubhouse and did something at the gates that proved that she is the current people's princess.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, arrived at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on July 2, 2026, for day four of the Wimbledon Championships, and she did not head straight for her seat. Instead, she made a stop outside the grounds that had the fans who had been queuing overnight still talking about it hours later.

A Detour Through the Ticket Queue

Kate had just wrapped up the grueling Three Peaks Challenge over the weekend, a fundraiser for the Royal Marsden Hospital, and she still made time to greet the fans who had spent the night camping out for a shot at a ticket to the fourth day of play, according to the Mirror.

She arrived in a double-breasted suit cut from periwinkle blue wool by Gabriela Hearst, the jacket left open over a simple white ribbed crew neck, its formal peak lapels offset by the easy, undone styling.

She shook hands, posed for selfies, and stopped to talk with people who had been waiting outside SW19 since the early hours of the morning.

One American woman in the line used the moment to congratulate her on finishing the Three Peaks Challenge. Kate called the queue an "accessible" way into the tournament before walking over to the ticket marquee, where she started handing out tickets herself and running the card machine.

She apologized to fans for "taking ages," and told the group they must be "desperate to get in and have a drink" after such a long wait. Max and Louis, who had been standing in line for seven hours, said it was "worth it" once the princess handed them their tickets directly.

Kate also reflected on what the queue system means to fans who do not have a royal box waiting for them. "It's just so amazing to be able to still, for these big events and things like that, to be able to still buy tickets on the day. It makes it so accessible for everybody, doesn't it?" she told one attendee, before telling the group to "have a really fun time" and heading in herself.

The moment echoed something Kate had spoken about before. In 2023, she told British number one Emma Raducanu that she used to wait in that very same queue as a child, arriving at "the crack of dawn" with her father, Michael Middleton, and her sister, Pippa Middleton.

She once stood exactly where those fans were standing.

Front Row Views on No. 18 and No. 1

Once inside, Kate walked past Henman Hill to cheers and applause from fans watching the match on the big screen.

She then slipped into Court 18 largely unnoticed, joining former British number one Tim Henman and All England Club chair Deborah Jevans during a break in the fifth game of the first set, as noted by the ATP Tour.

On her way there, retired building surveyor Maurice Jones, 77, ran into her by chance near Henman Hill. He told the Mirror she asked which court he was headed to and which players he planned to watch, then told him, "I hope you have a nice time, it's a good day for it," before gently touching his shoulder as they spoke.

Psychotherapist Clare Cox, 59, was waiting outside Court 18 with her daughter, Lois, when Kate walked by without the heavy security Cox expected.

"She looked so normal just walking past... She always gets it right with her outfits and her hair," Cox said, while Lois, a tennis coach, admitted, "I was like, 'Is that Kate Middleton!' She was wearing a lovely trouser suit."

Kate's presence turned into a good omen for Arthur Fery, who beat Otto Virtanen to reach the next round while she watched.

Fery's father, Loic Fery, said he had already received hundreds of photos of her in the stands by the time he spoke to reporters, adding that his son has long been "very, very attached" to playing for Great Britain despite having two French parents.

The Princess of Wales later made an unplanned stop at Court One to watch Katie Swan take on Madison Keys, sitting between two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and former pro Anne Keothavong for roughly an hour and 15 minutes.

BBC presenter Lee McKenzie mentioned her presence live during Keys' post-match interview, drawing cheers from the crowd, and Swan later admitted she had no idea the princess was watching until after the match ended.

Before retiring for a private lunch, Kate stopped to talk with children from the Shine Camera Club, a group formed in 2021, who had laid out polaroids they had taken around the grounds.

Looking at one photo of a tree, she said, "I love that tree, look at that... it's very abstract... it's a good spot, well done," and told the group, "Creativity is such a good way of exploring your emotions."

Fans Weigh In on Her Wimbledon Look

Not everyone was talking about the queue. Once photos of the blue suit started circulating on Reddit, the fit itself became its own topic of conversation.

Several commenters focused on the sizing. One wrote, "You can tell she doesn't have a stylist. The jacket is too big," while another said simply, "She is swimming in that jacket." A third asked, "Why has her body shape changed?"

Others pushed back on that read entirely. "i think that's the point- look where the jacket hits. it makes her appearance look fuller than it actually is [sic]," one person replied, and another agreed the oversized cut was likely intentional, writing, "I think it's big on purpose," to "hide how small / thin she is."

One commenter went into detail about the tailoring itself. "The ponytail is good. The jacket is not fitted correctly. The sleeves are too long-if the left arm relaxes, the cuff will be over her knuckles. Also not fitting at the shoulders and far too big around the bust. Really people, if someone has more money than God, they need to have clothes that fit correctly," they wrote.

Not every reaction was negative. "Okay, I'll say it: the suit is cheap-looking and ill-fitting. But I love the color, and the ponytail is a nice change from all those wigs and extensions," one fan admitted.

And another agreed, adding, "Exactly my thoughts. I think this is the first time I've seen Kate in such an ill-fitted outfit." One more compared the look to a retail display, joking, "That is an unfortunate suit. She looks like she's running a color consulting booth @ the mall. Oof."

This look followed the sunshine yellow outfit she wore to Royal Ascot just two weeks earlier. If the reaction is any indication, Kate is not done experimenting with color for the rest of the tournament.

Blue has become something of a signature for her this year. She wore it last month at Trooping the Colour in an ensemble that reminded people of Princess Diana.

A Look Decades in the Making

The princess arrived in a pale blue Lafayette coatdress by Catherine Walker, a design the brand describes as "an impeccably tailored, hand-crafted couture coatdress defined by precision."

Its silhouette runs long and sculpted through the bodice, built on sharp shoulders and clean princess seams that narrow at the waist before opening into a fluid midi-length skirt. A white contrast trim traces the angular lapels and runs down the asymmetric front, pulling focus to the double-breasted fastening and fabric-covered buttons.

Completing the look was a matching Philip Treacy hat, pearl floral Cassandra Goad earrings, and white heels. Pinned to her lapel was the Irish Guards Brooch, her token of support for the British Army regiment she backs as an honorary Colonel.

The nod to Princess Diana was hard to miss. The former Princess of Wales wore a Catherine Walker coatdress in a nearly identical pale blue shade upon her arrival at Huddersfield airport in July 1987, carrying the same contrast trim and the same quietly commanding silhouette.

The Children Matched, Right Down to the Details

Catherine did not step out alone in blue. Her children, Prince George, 12, Prince Louis, 8, and Princess Charlotte, 11, arrived by horse-drawn carriage in looks that appeared carefully considered.

The royal family maintained serious expressions while traveling in the carriage, though the bright sunshine may have contributed to their solemn look. George and Louis both wore baby blue ties with their suits, like ones they had worn just weeks earlier at Easter. Charlotte arrived in white, with blue accents on her dress and a coordinating ribbon in her hair, pulling the full family palette together with quiet precision.

The coordinated moment read as charming at first glance. But it was the carriage photos specifically that drew the sharpest attention online, and not for reasons anyone planned.

Sadness and Seatbelts Had the Internet Buzzing

Several carriage shots caught observers off guard because of the expressions on the children's faces. On Instagram, the reactions couldn't be stopped. "They never look as happy together as Meghan and Harry do with their kids. 🥺" one commenter wrote.

Another followed, "They don't look happy! The Sussex's always look genuinely happy as a family. 😑😑"

The comparison to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex surfaced more than once, carrying its own weight given that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were not at Trooping the Colour this year.

Then came the seatbelt comments. On Facebook, people zeroed in on the carriage seating arrangement with real alarm. "Why oh why aren't they wearing seatbelts?" one person wrote. "Do they not have to me wear seatbelts [sic]?" echoed another.

A third raised the stakes entirely, "I'm shocked that let them all ride together! That's the whole line of succession! [sic]" Someone else took issue with who sat where, "Wow...so many in one car with the youngest in the front...surely George should have been in the front or in a different car!"

A few observers pulled back from the logistics and focused on Catherine herself. "It doesnt look like her [sic]," one person wrote flatly. Another offered a gentler interpretation: "Princess of Wales doesn't look happy today I bet she's tired."

The Absent Guests and a Family Divided

While Catherine's blue ensemble quietly echoed Diana's, a different kind of royal history was unfolding in the background. Harry and Meghan have not been invited to Trooping the Colour as working royals since 2020, when they stepped back from their royal roles and moved to California.

Their history with the event goes further back than the absence suggests. Meghan made her debut at the parade just weeks after their 2018 wedding, and the couple returned the following year after welcoming Archie.

Both times, they rode in the carriage procession and joined the family on the Buckingham Palace balcony. In 2022, during Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee, they attended but watched from the Major General's Office, after the Palace limited balcony appearances to working royals only.

That very first Trooping the Colour in 2018 lodged itself in the family memory, though not warmly. In his memoir "Spare," Harry recalled Catherine asking Meghan what she thought of her first time at the parade. "And Meg joked: Colourful. And a yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole," he wrote.

Harry's Return and What Stays Behind

Despite this absence, Prince Harry is expected back in Britain next month, traveling to Birmingham in July for events tied to the 2027 Invictus Games.

But according to People, Meghan and their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are not currently expected to join him. The reason is the same one that has kept the family from returning together for years: security.

Harry has been locked in a legal battle to have his state-funded police protection reinstated after it was removed when he and Meghan stepped back from royal duties. Before the High Court in London, he argued that protection was necessary for his children "to feel at home" on British soil.

"The U.K. is my home. The U.K. is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the United States," he said. "That cannot happen if there is no possibility to keep them safe when they are on U.K. soil."

Archie and Lilibet have visited Britain just once since the family settled in the United States: for the Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. Speaking to the BBC, Harry described the wider family rupture with notable restraint:

"I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point in continuing to fight anymore."

He also mentioned his father's health, referencing King Charles' cancer diagnosis, announced in 2024 as part of why he wants to bury the hatchet. "Life is precious. I don't know how much longer my father has. He won't speak to me because of this security stuff, but it would be nice to reconcile," he said.

The two did meet privately on September 10, 2025, at Clarence House, sharing a conversation of 55 minutes that represented their first face-to-face contact in 19 months.

In January 2026, a review reportedly found that Harry met the criteria for enhanced protection while in Britain, with a source describing the matter as effectively a "formality." But no formal decision has been communicated, and sources say expectations for his July visit remain what they were: he goes alone.

But back to today's event, Catherine stood in pale blue while her children waved from a carriage, and the photographs did what photographs always do: they told several stories at once.
